Review

Praise for The Thom Hartmann Reader

“Thom Hartmann is a literary descendent of Ben Franklin and Tom Paine. His unflinching observations and deep passion inspire us to explore contemporary culture, politics, and economics; challenge us to face the facts of the societies we are creating; and empower us to demand a better world for our children and grandchildren.”
-John Perkins, author of the New York Times bestselling book Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

“Thom Hartmann channels the best of the American Founders with voice and pen. His deep attachment to a democratic civil society is just the medicine America needs. “
-Tom Hayden, author of The Long Sixties and director, Peace and Justice Resource Center.

“Thom Hartmann seeks out interesting subjects from such disparate outposts of curiosity that you have to wonder whether or not he uncovered them or they selected him.”
-Leonardo DiCaprio, actor, producer, and environmental activist

“Never one to shy away from the truth, Thom Hartmann’s collected works are inspiring, wise, and compelling. His work lights the way to a better America.”
-Van Jones, cofounder of RebuildTheDream.com and author of The Green Collar Economy

“Thom is a national treasure. Read him, embrace him, learn from him, and follow him as we all work for social change.”
-Robert Greenwald, political activist and founder and president of Brave New Films

“Right through the worst of the Bush years and into the present, Thom Hartmann has been one of the very few voices constantly willing to tell the truth. Rank him up there with Jon Stewart, Bill Moyers, and Paul Krugman for having the sheer persistent courage of his convictions.”
-Bill McKibben, author of Eaarth

“With the ever-growing influence of corporate CEOs and their right-wing allies in all aspects of American life, Hartmann’s work is more relevant than ever. Throughout his career, Hartmann has spoken compellingly about the value of people-centered democracy and the challenges that millions of ordinary Americans face today as a result of a dogma dedicated to putting profit above all else. This collection is a rousing call for Americans to work together and put people first again.”
-Richard Trumka, President, AFL-CIO

“Through compelling personal stories, Hartmann presents a dramatic and deeply disturbing picture of humans as a profoundly troubled species. Hope lies in his inspiring vision of our enormous unrealized potential and his description of the path to its realization.”
-David Korten, author of Agenda for a New Economy, The Great Turning, and When Corporations Rule the World

“Thom Hartmann is a creative thinker and committed small-d democrat. He has dealt with a wide range of topics throughout his life, and this book provides an excellent cross section. The Thom Hartmann Reader will make people both angry and motivated to act.”
-Dean Baker, economist and author of Plunder and Blunder, False Profits, and Taking Economics Seriously

“In an age rife with media-inspired confusion and political cowardice, we yearn for a decent, caring, deeply human soul whose grasp of the problems confronting us provides a light by which we can make our way through the quagmire of lies, distortions, pandering, and hollow self-puffery that strips the American Dream of its promise. How lucky we are, then, to have access to the wit, wisdom, and willingness of Thom Hartmann, who shares with us here that very light, grown out of his own life experience.”
-Mike Farrell, actor, political activist, and author of Just Call Me Mike and Of Mule and Man

Between my doing a radio show interviewing the Creme de la Creme, and founding and running conferences on brain research, positive psychology and the science of story, I've had more than my share of opportunities to talk with, listen to, read and get to know brain surgeons, rocket scientists and philosophers, from e-company founders like Craig of Craigslist and Arriana Huffington to Chomsky and Zinn, Greenwald and Kucinich.

Thom Hartmann stands out as unique for a few reasons. First is his breadth and DEPTH of knowledge. I've never met anyone who knows so much, exhaustively, in detail, about so many disparate areas as Thom Hartmann. Whether it's brain science, anthropological perspectives on indigenous Maori tribes, the latest take on the diagnosis and treatment of neurobehavioral continuum "disorders" like ADHD and Autism, 18th century constitutional history or the state of the economy in Argentina, Hartmann is brilliant in his depth of knowledge and his ability to integrate it.

Perhaps it's the integration that's so powerful. Perhaps it's being able to pull such far flung bits of information and putting them into new ways of seeing and understanding.

If you've read one or two of Thom's book, this is a great place to drink deeper from the well. if you've never read any Hartmann, wow, are you in for a major treat.

Once you get a taste, you'll surely, if you do media, want to check out his radio and TV shows as well. But unlike many radio and TV personalities, Hartmann started off as a writer and thinker and THEN moved to radio, then TV. His mind is amazing, but balanced with a great heart and soul too.

Thom Hartmann is an interesting man on many levels. He never finished college. He has ADD. He has started several successful businesses. He and his wife, Louise, have been partners in various ventures including starting a school for troubled children in Vermont. The Hartmanns have devoted their life to helping others. In addition, Hartmann is a lifelong student. He has also written many books on many topics. This Thom Hartmann Reader gives you a glimpse into Hartmann's life and thoughts. Of the many intriguing experiences Thom relates in his book, the one that I keep coming back to is when he relates how he found 12 volumes on the life of Thomas Jefferson in a home he and his wife bought in Vermont and how that cache of books led Hartmann to write several books and articles. The find also deepened Hartmann's knowledge and interest in history.

Excellent selection of readings by one of the most well-rounded liberal thinkers of our time. Thoughtfully put together so that reading it is still enjoyable. You should read some of his other books and watch his television programs, like The Big Picture, as well. The more you get to know Thom Hartmann, the more you want to hear what he has to say.

Thom Hartmann is a fountain of wisdom for those willing to peel back their illusions and look at the truth of where we are going as a human race. He is very well-versed in philosophy, political science, government, education, history, social studies, and religion. A must-read!

In this book, Thom Hartmann shows why he is the smartest progressive voice on the radio. With extensive research, he gives a historical perspective on the ideals of our nation's founding fathers, and shows how our country has been drifting away from the concept of "we, the people." If you believe that corporations are people and that freedom of speech means they anonymously can pump unlimited funds into political races, then this book is not for you. If, instead, you believe that politicians should work for the common good, then you will find a friend in Thom Hartmann.

While chronicling our slide into "corporatocracy," and the resulting environmental degradation caused by unfettered capitalism, he manages to stay positive, and suggests ways that every person can help to bring about much-needed change. In spite of the overwhelming challenges we face, he has managed to maintain his idealism. For this reason, I feel uplifted, rather than depressed, after reading Thom Hartmann. I look forward to reading more of his books.
