Thrill-seeking billionaire Thomas Crown (Brosnan) loves nothing more than courting disaster and winning! So when his world becomes too stiflingly safe, he pulls off his boldest stunt ever: stealing a priceless painting in broad daylight from one of Manhattan's most heavily guarded museums. But his post-heist excitement soon pales beside an even greater challenge: Catherine Banning (Russo). A beautiful insurance investigator hired to retrieve the artwork, Catherine's every bit as intelligent, cunning and hungry for adventure as he is. And just when Thomas realizes he's finally met his match, she skillfully leads him into a daring game of cat and mouse that's more intoxicating and dangerous than anything either of them has ever experienced before!

So a HUGE thanks to the movie gods for getting it *completely* right the second time around! Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo have the chemistry that McQueen and Dunaway never did, hard ad they tried to fake it. The original plot has been changed from breaking into a bank vault to swiping a priceless painting from a prestigious museum with a multitude of security measures in place. How Crown does it is so slick that I had to rewatch the "tell" several times to catch all the steps he took to carry it off. Ms. Russo's clothes are befitting of an extremely well-paid, world traveling insurance fraud investigator, rather than Ms. Dunaway's that screamed "K-Mart mark-down rack". The ending was perfect, no loose ends as in the original. But be forewarned that this version of the theme song "Windmills" might keep replaying in your head for several days. Perfect!
Tomas Crown doesn't have much to lose or overcome. He's a hyper capable, and intelligent man who's bored with the people who surround him. In many ways, a moral scoundrel, who doesn't even keep to a 'theif's code,' willingly sending the criminals he hired to prison for a lifetime.
It's the insurance agent, Catherine Banning, who has everything to loose, her wealth, her estates all to live the rest of her life 'on the run' with a criminal. They can still have high caliber wine every night and sleep on a tropical island, of course.
A story told from her point of view would have been far more interesting, and a far better re-make.
Faye Dunaway played Russo's character in the original and had a cameo in this one. A cute touch.
As with the original the movie begins with the heist. The difference is that in the first version Crown was only the mastermind, here he does the actual robbery. More importantly in both films the heist is only a foil. What happens afterward is the real center of The Thomas Crown Affair. That’s the relationship between Crown and Banning. Like the original it’s a battle of wits. That’s what made this film so enjoyable to watch. It was a competition between two very smart and sexy people.
While not as ground breaking as the original this version is very good and captures the feel and intent of the first.
I loved the acting, but I do enjoy Pierce Brosnan. Hewas as sophisticated and classy as his James Bone character. I thought Brosnan and Russo worked well together on screen with nice chemistry.
I liked this movie enough to own it. The movie sets up a good mental match game between the two which I thought they played out very nicely. I loved the ending and enjoyed the way it was done.

All that said, once I had contacted Amazon on-line and they had called me back at no cost to me, I got an English version as a replacement, any expenses incurred refunded and all was dealt with in a most courteous and efficient way so my praise goes to the Customer Service provided by Amazon.
