One issue that makes it not "great" is that the single support brace for the inclined section probably isn't going to keep that section of track held up for long under the rigours of typical 3 year old play (you'll notice that there's nothing flat at the bottom of the brace to keep it flush to the floor.) The other would be the issue that led us to discontinuing a collection we'd begun for our oldest grandson when the line began in 2010... the trains and rail cars are simply no longer the nice, heavy diecast metal Fisher-Price used to have, but simply plasticized with metal magnetic connectors. (And just so you're aware, Take-n-Play products are not compatible with wooden tracks.)
It's an okay set, but it's too bad the simple playsets and quality diecasts from days gone by aren't still readily available for youngsters just discovering Thomas, and for their budget-conscious parents. Doubt too many people are going to find this set worth $25, let alone the close to $30 Amazon lists it for as of today.
JULY 2015 UPDATE: Fisher-Price includes a yearly "Collector Checklist" in some (not all) Take-n-Play products, but they're pretty much just a sales pitch for the latest products. There've been 15 playsets that fall into what I've come to categorize as an "intermediate" range of between $25-30, since Fisher-Price took over the Thomas diecast line in 2010 from Learning Curve's "Take-Along" and renamed it "Take-n-Play". In case you're someone who's truly interested in collecting, or just would like to see what the other options have been released in that price range, here's a list for you (in order of introduction): Cranky at the Docks, Tidmouth Sheds, Knapford Station, Knapford Holiday Celebration, Sodor Steamworks Repair Shed, Sodor Search & Rescue Center, Twist & Tumble Cargo Drop, Thomas' Treasure Hunt Adventure, Thomas' Shark Exhibit, Paxton at the Blue Mountain Stone Shed, Percy's Penguin Adventure, Spills & Thrills on Sodor, Percy to the Rescue, Water Works Rescue, and Spiral Tower Tracks Mega Set. We'd pretty much recommend all of them except for the last four!
10/25/16 update: I'm going back and adding this update to each of my Take-n-Play reviews, since it's important information for any parents/grandparents out there with a young Thomas & Friends enthusiast who holds a special place in their heart, and is considering beginning a collection for them. I just found out the TnP line of diecast trains/vehicles/rolling stock with magnetic connectors is being REPLACED by Fisher-Price in 2017 with a diecast line called "Thomas & Friends Adventures", which will be TnP models modified with PLASTIC HOOK & LOOP COUPLERS. Obviously, your youngster will not be able to connect the 2014-2016 TnP models (with their flat, round 1-way magnetic connectors), nor the 2010-2014 TnP models - or Learning Curve's compatible 2002-2010 Take Along models - with their protruding 2-way magnetic connectors - with the new types of couplers as of next year.
2/17/17 Update: Fisher-Price must've received a slew of complaints from Take-n-Play owners, because they've now developed magnetic clip engine connectors (to clip onto the magnetic trains - but ONLY those with the flat round 1-way magnets... they don't want to invite comparisons between the high quality of the older trains with protruding 2-way magnets! - that have a plastic hook & loop coupler to be able to connect to the new Adventures engines), along with track adapter pieces (Take-n-Play track pieces/sets have only 1 male or female part at the end to connect up to other track/sets, while the new Adventures tracks/sets have both one male & 1 female part on EACH end), available by directly contacting F-P.
