Editorial Reviews

As seen on PBS Great Performances

Spanning several generations, Buddenbrooks is the sweeping tale of the rise and fall of a wealthy German merchant family. Plagued by unsuccessful business decisions, disastrous marriages and personal tragedies, the Buddenbrooks family finds themselves in danger of losing their fortune as well as their souls in this "sumptuous production" (The New York Times) of Thomas Mann’s most famous work.

Thomas Mann has captured the essence of a family in history. The movie is outstanding in its detailed report of the times and the actors represent each character with excellent performance. It is so good that you want to see it again and again because with each viewing you see more details which escaped your eyes because at first you want to get the essence of the story. It is superior entertainment - especially if you do speak German. The camera captures beautiful views of Lübek and the surrounding landscapes. It is a REAL TREAT.

This is an excellent series. I wish there were more like it.
Had many hours of enjoyable viewing. Even though it is in German, I still
found it most interesting and am happy I spent the money on it. Also,
other family members enjoyed it. Need more offerings such as this.

When I was a teenager, growing up in Hamburg, Germany (which is
about 1-1/2 hours away from Luebeck, the setting for the Buddenbrook history) I read the Thomas Mann book, which my parents had in our library.

Of course, now that I'm 81, I didn't remember too much of the
book, but the video brought much of it back to me.

I liked it, but I believe that not too many people, not acquainted with that region of Northern Germany, and the
history of the cities belonging to the Hanseatic League, which include Hamburg, Luebeck, Bremen and a few others, would be
that interested in this family's story.

Still, it is an epic story of a bygone era, and I enjoyed seeing it.

We enjoyed this video immensely. We love the book-- we've read it in both German and English, and although the video somewhat abbreviates things, it doesn't leave out anything crucial. And as lovers of the old city of Luebeck and the Baltic Sea coast, we could see these things again in all their beauty. Well done!

Intelligent film version of Thomas Mann's fictional, multigenerational chronicle of a wealthy north German merchant family during the mid-nineteenth century. While I have not read any of Mann's works, I first learned of the Nobel Prize winning author while learning the German language in school. If you decide to watch this 11-part miniseries, be prepared for an investment of approximately one hour per episode, as well as English subtitles, if you do not know the spoken German language, as this film is not dubbed in English, and some segments (especially toward the beginning of the film) will likely require focus and some quick reading due to lengthy exchanges between characters. Some might be initially inclined to think that this film lacks plot, but if viewers stick it out they will likely find that instead of traditional dramatic structure, this film consists of a number of subplots forming the story of a family. And at least for me, a first generation American of German immigrants, one of the best aspects of this version of Buddenbrooks is that movies of this genre available in English are exceedingly rare compared to the vast array of period pieces available about those living in the United Kingdom. Glimpses of traditional German culture are presented throughout, in areas such as the education system, parental pressure to make early life choices, the German (i.e. Protestant) work ethic, marriage ceremonies, deaths of loved ones, Christmas traditions, the emphasis on spirituality in everyday speech, and different regions of Germany (although the focus is mainly on Lübeck in the north).Read more ›
