About Thomas Ruthford
Thomas Eric Ruthford's life made quite a change in 2001 when he went from daily newspaper journalist to Peace Corps volunteer, and from spiritual wanderer to Orthodox Christian in the course of just a few months. Despite all the clarity his baptism and national service brought into his life, it didn't improve his success with meeting girls. He even asked out a couple of girls who are now nuns.
Ruthford's journeys took him from Western Washington state, where he grew up, to Ukraine, where he served as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer and got an amazing spiritual education from the recovering Orthodox Church there. He also served as the financial officer of Raphael House of San Francisco, a homeless shelter for families run by Orthodox Christians who take it as part of their ministry to live in the shelter themselves.
Now Ruthford works as a freelance journalist, and is the business manager of a small non-profit news organization called the Seattle PostGlobe, and has published story packages on homelessness and sex trafficking in Seattle. His works of journalism appear under the name "Eric Ruthford" as the name Thomas was one that he took on at baptism.
Ruthford was born in 1979. He is now married, and lives in the Seattle area, and likes to go on multi-day bike rides. He and his wife, Miri, love taking their overeager dog, Jisa, to the park to play.

Blog postHere's a humor article I wrote that The Onion Dome published called "Rules for Dating Our Orthodox Son."
For those of you who don't know, The Onion Dome's intent is satire / parody for Orthodox Christians who like humorous writing on religion, so it's not meant to be serious.7 years ago Read more -

Blog postHere's an excerpt from a New York Times story on Mormon women: The block of ice cream was melting fast. Jessica Sagers, who returned from her mission last year fluent in Korean, worked quickly with her date, using a knife and a melon baller to sculpture the slab of vanilla into something that resembled a skull. In a room carpeted with plastic tarps at Brigham Young University, male-female pairs chiseled away, then scooped their artwork into bowls to make sundaes topped with candy.

Blog postIt sure has been a long time since I posted anything here. Some important elements of life have intervened, specifically a new baby who decided to arrive quite early. You can read all you want about that at the blog we created for Gabriel John's long hospital stay. Or, if you're feeling more visual, here's a photo montage of the process.
What's inspired me to write today is that I've discovered that the Oxford English Dictionary now has an entry for the term "friend zone."8 years ago Read more -

Blog postHere's a link to a fictional short story in the Kenyon Review entitled "Esther Donnaly" by Ron Carlson. It's about a married couple putting things back together. It cheered me up. It's not quite the same topic area as what I've been writing, but I feel that professional courtesy requires me to call out good writing when I see it.10 years ago Read more

Blog postI got interviewed about my book on Come Receive the Light, a program on the Orthodox Christian Network. My interview is the second half of this particular segment. It went pretty well, although Skype proved to be a pretty fickle medium.
I've also sent my book to Google Books, which will make 20 percent of the book available for reading as a sample.
I'm still looking for speaking opportunities. Promoting a first book is harder than it looks! Thanks for all your support!10 years ago Read more -

Blog postBeing Christians, we have the dual life of having the heavenly experience of worshiping God, and of living in – and ministering to – a world that's not very interested in worshiping God. This contradiction we live is especially pronounced for Christian singles: we live in a culture that encourages us to wait to marry until we've experienced education, work and love. We’re also encouraged to above all be true to ourselves, which makes us look strange when we cite religion as a reason we cannot do11 years ago Read more
