About the Author
In the early 1940s, a loving father crafted a small blue wooden engine for his son, Christopher. The stories that this father, Reverend W. Awdry, made up to accompany this wonderful toy were first published in 1945. He continued to create new adventures and characters until 1972, when he retired from writing. Reverend Awdry died in 1997 at the age of 85.

My only complaint is that language has been changed, mainly to appeal to an American audience, though I'm not sure that's really necessary. It's true, Sir Topham Hatt is no longer the Fat Controller of yore, but also the word "trucks" has been replaced by "freight cars" or "cars" almost without exception. I've had to explain to my son that we Brits call them "trucks", and when I read the stories aloud, he will see the words "freight cars" on the page but I will say "trucks" (not an easy feat).
Nevertheless it's a fine collection, comprised of #1 through #13 & #15 out of the 26 original Railway Series books -- and I would highly recommend it for both young Thomas enthusiasts and their parents!
My 2 1/2 year old "reads" this book. There are quite a few new stories adapted from this version. This is the British version in art and language. There are a lot of words that might be too complex for younger kids, but this will help develop an excellent vocabulary. The art is also vintage style and very lovely. I used a projector to paint some of the images on my son's wall. The only drawback is the book is extremely heavy and the jacket comes off easily. I ended up color-copying some of the more favorite books in it to laminate. I use those stories for bath time sometimes.
All in all it was a wise purchase and much cheaper than buying it at the local bookstore. I would buy it 100 times over.
