Editorial Reviews

2012 release by an all-star cast of musicians and actors lead by Tim Robbins, Dr. John, Bill Frisell, Ralph Steadman, Annie Ross, John Joyce III and Will Forte who bring Thompson's classic Gonzo reportage on the 1970 Kentucky Derby to life through spoken word and musical composition. Conceived by executive producer Michael Minzer, the project was produced by Hal Willner who brought together a stellar group of musicians led by composer and arranger Bill Frisell and including Curtis Fowlkes (trombone), Ron Miles (trumpet), Eyvind Kang (viola), Doug Weiselman (woodwinds), Jenny Scheinman (violin), Hank Roberts (cello) and Kenny Wolleson (drums, percussion). Ralph Steadman does double duty portraying himself in the narration and contributing original artwork for the project.

So happy to see this album is completed and now available. To fans of Hunter Thompson just looking for a good "book on tape" of his writing, you're in for a much larger FUN surprise. This is much more a piece of sound art (with extensive production, film theme music, etc) containing one of the best performances of Tim Robbins career. Everything in this record is strong, and one of the best tributes to Thompson. Pick up a copy, you'll love it.

I have to say I wasn't sure what to expect when I first heard about this record. I'm don't ever really listen to audio books and I always get nervous about any adaptation or interpretation of Thompson's writing. When it works it is great but when it doesn't...well the less said the better.

Thankfully, this record has more than exceeded my expectations. Which is a huge relief as The Kentucky Derby article is one of my favourite pieces by Thompson and is pretty much hallowed ground in the Gonzo cannon. Failure is not an option. I think it is fair to say that full credit must go to Michael Minzer for bringing Hal Willner on board as producer along with composer Bill Frisell, whose accompanying musical score is a delight and without which this project would have no doubt suffered greatly.

As for the cast, obviously the number one question concerns Tim Robbins role as Hunter. When he was first announced in the role I was intrigued. I never thought that he was an obvious choice for the part but I have always been a huge fan of his work ever since I saw The Shawshank Redemption (if you are one of the few mortals who haven't seen this film then you need to rectify this immediately). I suppose having gotten used to Johnny Depp portraying Thompson onscreen it has become difficult to imagine anyone else playing that role. Comparisons are inevitable, even for such a different project as this. Thankfully however, Robbins is an inspired choice as the Good Doctor. At first it is a bit jarring to hear another actor take on the role, but what a take it is. Robbins brings a wealth of experience to the table here and it really shows.

Hunter S. Thompson's early gonzo journalism piece is a great read, but let Mr. Frisell put music to it while Tim Robbins and others "perform" the writing? Priceless. Having enjoyed the disc I'm even looking more forward to the upcoming live performance...

Just as the 'radio play' version of "Fear & Loathing" gave a different perspective, so does "Kentucky Derby...". It adds life and even more excitement to the words!!! I only wish I could see all Ralph's drawings while the reading was going on!!

It is a gift for a true Hunter fan! Anyone who has read Thompson would appreciate hearing his words and the observations with a great cast of characters, both in the text and reading it.
