If you like Thor this is one of the milestones in his character run you should pick up. Collections one and two are truly epic and recommended.

John Romita Jr. draws some of the best action scenes and has some of the most unique character designs in all of comicdom. You couple that with the writing of Dan Jurgens (who gave us many great Superman stories) and this is just an excellent piece in a larger arc.

What some newer readers don't realize is that Thor was not this blonde bubble-head/hot-head as he's depicted in the Marvel films. Although Chris Hemsworth's interpretation and performance of that charger is "fun", it is not accurate to the Thor in the comics.

As a result a lot of the modern-era of comics try to emulate the Hemsworth Thor and NOT the way he was originally conceived by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

Dan Jurgens does an excellent job of capturing the character of a hero as noble and worthy as Thor. He is a mighty god, but a humble god. Thor is still a fish-out-of-water in this series, but he's not a complete idiot; he knows humans and he understand Midgard.

I really recommend this volume and am looking forward to reading the other volumes.

Dan Jurgens run on Thor in my opinion , is the best run on the series. better than Simonson on par with Lee and Kirby. nowadays runs on comics last only 6 to 12 issues in most cases. Jurgens run lasted over 70. in this series we see a new human counterpart the death of Odin and eventually thor taking over and ruling earth.
and the build up is very epic. this should be on every comic lovers shelf. it truly deserves a omnibus treatment preferably a few hardback volumes , but theres not so what are you waiting for buy this now.

The Jurgens/Romita Jr. run in this (and two subsequent volumes) is very good, but I'm afraid it's just not "classic."

The storytelling is outstanding and the plot is good, but the artwork is not JR Jr.'s best, and some of the dialogue is just so hackneyed. If I have to read "I SAY THEE NAY" one more @$%! time, I might scream.

I am a huge fan of JR Jr., going all the way back to his Iron Man and Amazing Spider-Man work in the '80s. I also love Klaus Janson, and usually his inks work great with JR's pencils, but in this run, it just seems like everything was rushed. The art looks unfinished and sloppy. Romita Jr. and Janson's work in Wolverine: Enemy of the State a few years later is far superior to this run.

This creative team did a great job in taking us back to when Thor had to protect a secret identity and deal with personal issues on Earth as well as Asgard. I miss that about Thor. If the art and dialogue were up to par with the creators' normal standards, I would say this run deserves its place among the great Thor volumes.

Thor's relaunch in 1998 was part of an industry-wide return to basics approach. After the excesses of the early 90s which saw the success of 'extreme' books like Youngblood and endless crossovers like the the clone saga, both Marvel and DC attempted a return to basics.

In this book Thor returns from an interdimensional (and cross-company) excursion to find Asgard deserted and in ruins, but before he can investigate is called into battle. He is soon forced to merge with a paramedic named Jake Olson and adopt a new secret identity. At which point he... does nothing useful. He fights a robot, teams up with Spiderman, fights a sea serpent, mopes about his missing family and friends but really does nothing that might help answer his questions.

Yeah it all gets wrapped up in the next book but at least half of this book feels like padding, we hear about Thor's need for answers but never see him do much about it. Jurgens should have done more showing and less telling. Show Thor searching the ruins of Asgard for clues, talking to Dr Strange, the Fantastic Four and all the other sources of information he can call on. Make it clear he is spending every waking hour searching for his lost people. The book never communicates the urgency of his mission.

The dialogue is a bit wooden and repetitive, there's a reoccurring question of whether or not Thor is a god and who is he to call himself a god that feels superficial. The scenes with Jake Olson's domestic life are better though and I like the trick that Jake's thoughts are in Thor's Shakespearean dialect while his words come out in casual modern English.

The art, mostly by the great John Romita Jr, is fantastic. Thor throughout is drawn as larger than life, towering above mere mortals. The action scenes are suitably epic with shattering buildings and massive bursts of power. Of course this becomes a little inappropriate at times. In one scene Thor confronts his old rival Hercules who promptly punches him through a wall and into the side of a bus. And then they make up and walk away. "Sorry about your building, shame about the bus, hope no one was hurt!" Yeah, it's a comic cliche but it's not a great one.

Overall this and the second book are good reads, but not great ones. The art really raises the score a lot.

While the book version was released with the Peter Parker Spider-Man issue included to keep the story complete the kindle version does not. So I enjoyed the story as it developed but the issue ends and takes up in Thor #2 leaving those of us with the kindle version lost and unable to purchase the Parker issue in another kindle version as it is not available as far as my search has determined. This will definitely halt my further purchases. Very disappointed.
