Purchase options and add-ons
“Beautiful….Compelling entertainment.” —New York Times
One of the most beloved novels of all time, The Thorn Birds, Colleen McCullough’s sweeping family saga of dreams, titanic struggles, dark passions, and forbidden love in the Australian Outback, returns to enthrall a new generation.
The Thorn Birds is a chronicle of three generations of Clearys—an indomitable clan of ranchers carving lives from a beautiful, hard land while contending with the bitterness, frailty, and secrets that penetrate their family. It is a poignant love story, a powerful epic of struggle and sacrifice, a celebration of individuality and spirit. Most of all, it is the story of the Clearys' only daughter, Meggie, and the haunted priest, Father Ralph de Bricassart—and the intense joining of two hearts and souls over a lifetime, a relationship that dangerously oversteps sacred boundaries of ethics and dogma.

Now, on to the positive portion of my review. Given the quantity of reviews already posted, I'll spare a book report and just say what moved me to enjoy the story. I love romances and this one kept me very much enthralled from the beginning until the end. I enjoyed the writing style and I also enjoyed learning about Australia -- enough so that I was flipping over to Google unfamiliar terms, etc.
As for the characters, I didn't fall head over heels in love with any of them but did feel empathy because of the positions they placed themselves. Meggie and her siblings were a catastrophe at the hands of their ice-cold mother. Fee's detachment wasn't any kinder than her sister-in-law, Mary's, cold, miser heart. And I don't know squat about the Catholic church but can't help but think that one can remove himself from his lofty priestly position if he really, really wanted that to happen -- at any cost. Clearly Father Ralph's love for Meggie was not as strong as his love for prestige. What a pity. And frankly, I didn't really care for her daughter Justine and so I wasn't moved when she finally had her epiphany at the end of the story. Her Raine was such a long suffering fellow and I didn't really see how he, in his maturity, could be excited about an immature and self-absorbed Justine. What a long road ahead for this couple.
I'm giving this story 4 stars because it did entertain me to the level that I had a hard time putting the book down, but I don't see myself ever re-reading it again.
The substance.

For its complex characters and story, it is a very racy read
