Confession: I haven’t read The Thorn Bearer yet (but eventually will). But I was at once taken with Catherine’s brokenness and David’s unbreakable connection with her, and his willingness to put aside the mistakes of her past that might keep her down. Instead, together they find a wholeness that remains elusive when they’re apart. I too experienced those same feelings of unworthiness after I got pregnant with my first child before I was married, and again when I ultimately divorced 3 years later while expecting my second daughter. I immediately connected with Catherine’s strength and cheeky spirit. She’s not afraid to stand her ground when her commitment to her newness in Christ is challenged after she accepted the grace He offers. My own husband is much like David, a fine man who is full of honor, and who looks past the sins of Catherine’s past to see only the beauty of her soul washed clean. Their love story was deeply affected by circumstances, by outside forces, and by their own changes, but they must find a way to stay true to the promises that they make. Absolutely unforgettable.

While the first book in the Penned in Time series, The Thorn Bearer, is about Ashleigh and is a 5* book, The Thorn Keeper is about Ashleigh’s sister, Catherine, and is an amazing story of redemption, love and the struggle that truly loving someone can bring within a time of troubling circumstances.
Catherine is introduced in The Thorn Bearer and has life all wrong. She assumed things in Book 1 that she thought were against her but she finds out that a horrible secret is to blame for her feelings of being inadequate to her father. Because of her lack of a healthy father-daughter relationship, she looks for what she thinks is love while also feeling the burden of saving her family’s financial woes through an advantageous marriage. She makes so many mistakes until she meets Dr. David Ross. He leads her to Christ and she truly starts anew.
Catherine is a new creation; however, she must live with the sins of her past looming in front of her. She is constantly reminded of her past and sins by those around her....did no one trust the change that God had brought to her soul? She finds ways to overcome...
She begins to give of herself to the community and to the makeshift hospital where she is reintroduced to David Ross. This story invites you to enjoy the developing love they have for each other, the hardships of moving forward and the pressures of the war and what it brings.
The ebook that I purchased did not have clear divisions between scenes at times, so that was a bit confusing. While some of the other characters moved within the story, I would have liked to have seen a bit more of Ashleigh and Sam. I will say that Pepper Basham has written some beautiful scenes between the main characters that I will probably reread over and over again. She shows the beauty of a covenant love in a Christian way, eliciting the feelings that one has with love and the beauty of the relationship without overly described intimacy. She writes with flair, wittiness, humor and feistiness that makes her characters banter so much fun! This is one of the best historical romance stories I have read.
This book is clean, without inappropriate language. It takes the reader through the differences of love within sin and love within the boundaries of God’s covenant love.

WARNING: this review contains SPOILER. I love the sweet and tender relationship between David and Catherine. He's so loving and tender towards her. 76% into the book I made up my mind to give 5 stars but then the author has to create unnecessary drama/filler to the story by making David lost his memory toward the end of the book. Urg, really?! this is the go to route in many romance drama just to make things dramatic. After loving the character of David the author created from the beginning, after he lost his memory it's like I'm being introduced to a completely different person. Not the gentle loving David that I grow to like. I hate it. Im not buying his love for her the second time. It's like he is more enamored by her beauty after he lost his memory. No more tender love between them. And the author doesnt take time to develop their relationship again. Of course not. She created this unnecessary drama toward the end of the book so there's no space for it. So everything is wrapped up abruptly. As I was reading it I kept thinking this is so ridiculous, ruining a good story with rubbish.
She could have focused on how Alexander, David, and Catherine deal with Aunt Maureen. But no. Instead of focusing on finishing the drama she created from the beginning, the author added a new stupid one.
She could have focused on how David and Catherine deal with their baby girl and their family life after the birth of the baby in that era. Maureen's part was ended in a few sentences from one of lesser characters after she gave birth. like giving us information about what happened to maureen instead of getting us involved in the story.
I dont mind if she added the "lost memory plot" in the middle of the story so she has time to develop their relationship all over again. Nope. Too much unnecessary filler/drama with abrupt wrap-up. What a waste. Hence the 3 stars.

Loved it. How it covers so many aspects of human oi interactions; those that heal, and those that harm. Love how Catherine shines despite the difficulties thrown her way. A truly epic-like tale. Loved every minute of it. Can't wait to read the other book of hers too.
