Smart practices for healthy living

Nutritional supplements may be popular, but are they right for you? That depends. Like medications, nutritional supplements contain ingredients that affect how your body functions. Although nutritional supplements can be beneficial, in some instances they can be risky.

As you learn more about the vitamins, minerals, botanicals, enzymes, and amino acids that are the ingredients in nutritional supplements, keep the following points in mind:

1. Wellness requires an overall solid foundation in health-promoting activities. Good nutrition, physical activity, stress management, and social support are key elements for every individual.

2. It is important to build that solid foundation in health-promoting activities in addition to considering the use of nutritional supplements.

3. If you think a nutritional supplement might help you meet your overall health goals, talk to your health-care professional about it. This step can help prevent a potential supplement-drug interaction or side effect. A team approach is always the best way to optimize your health and wellness.

Best wishes for good health!

Multi-vitamin/mineral supplements

What are multi-vitamin/mineral nutritional supplements?
Multi-vitamin/mineral supplements are the most common nutritional supplement products taken by adults. Ideally, you would get all of your needed vitamins and minerals — known as nutrients — through your diet. However, research suggests that many Americans do not get all of the nutrients they need through diet alone. Over time, lack of these nutrients can contribute to health problems.

Should I consider taking a multi-vitamin/mineral nutritional supplement?
The answer is "maybe."  If you eat a healthy, balanced diet, then you might already be obtaining adequate amounts of the vitamins and minerals you need, such as vitamin C and iron. On the other hand, nutrients such as magnesium and vitamin D are not as easy to get through your diet. For example, although most individuals get enough iron in their diet, women of childbearing age or older adults who have difficulty absorbing iron can benefit from taking a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement that contains iron.*
According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Americans typically are not eating a diet that provides them with all of the nutrients they need. By the CDC's definition, adults should be eating about two cups of fruit and two to three cups of vegetables every day. In a 2013 CDC survey, only 13.1 percent of the U.S. population met sufficient fruit intake. In this same survey, only 8.9 percent of adults met the recommendation for daily vegetable intake.

A multi-vitamin/mineral supplement can be helpful if you:
  • Have a restricted diet. For example, vegans can be at risk of a vitamin B12 deficiency because vitamin B12 is primarily found in animal products.
  • Have a health condition or chronic illness.
  • Are over age 50.
  • Are a heavy user of alcohol.
  • Have had gastric bypass surgery.
  • Are on dialysis.
  • Take a prescription medication or over-the-counter medication daily.
  • Are a woman of childbearing age. If you plan to become pregnant or are pregnant, ask your health-care professional about a prenatal supplement.
The above factors often indicate a need for better nutrition, either through your diet or from supplementation.

A multi-vitamin/mineral nutritional supplement with ingredients in the appropriate amounts can help you in several ways:
  • It promotes cardiovascular health*
  • It helps maintain brain health*
  • It supports immune function*
  • It promotes eye health*
  • It helps maintain bone health*
  • It supports healthy aging*
  • It supports stress management*
Multi-vitamin/mineral nutritional supplement products are safe for most adults. However, if you are taking a prescription or an over-the-counter medication, then it is always best to consult with your health-care professional before starting to take a nutritional supplement product.

For example, an ingredient in a multi-vitamin/mineral dietary supplement might interact with a blood-thinning medication such as warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven). As another example, smokers, and possibly past smokers, should avoid taking a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement that provides more than 100 percent of the FDA's daily recommended amount for vitamin A (either as preformed retinol or beta-carotene or a combination of the two).
Mayo Clinic's take on multi-vitamin/mineral supplements
Integrative medicine specialists at Mayo Clinic suggest that the best way to get your vitamins and minerals is through a nutritious diet. However, if you struggle to eat a balanced diet despite your best efforts, then a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement can be part of optimizing your health. Specific situations where a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement can be especially appropriate include:
  • You aren't eating the generally recommended daily servings of fruits, vegetables, and other healthy foods.
  • Because of allergies or intolerances, your diet is limited to certain foods.
  • You are a strict vegetarian.
  • You are in need of extra nutrient support due to a health condition that can cause nutrient malabsorption.
  • You are over age 65.
Follow these steps if you choose to use a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement:
  • Select a multi-vitamin/mineral nutritional supplement that contains a wide variety of vitamins and minerals in appropriate amounts.
  • Check the contents and the amounts of any other nutritional supplement products you are taking to be sure you're not getting too much of any specific nutrient, which can be potentially harmful.
  • Take your multi-vitamin/mineral supplement with food or meals.
