For years I suffered from PVCs (premature ventricular contractions). Some days, 1 out of 5 heartbeats would “skip” all day and all night and last for days. This would happen multiple times a year. I saw several cardiologists over the years; wore halter monitors; had a stress tests; heart ultrasound, etc…. They tried different medications (like Propranolol). Nothing made me feel quite right, and some of the meds caused weight gain, so I eventually gave up on the doctors fixing me, and I turned to the web. There, I stumbled across a web forum where other PVC sufferers discussed how potassium cured their PVCs. So, I went back to my cardiologist and asked him to test my potassium levels. He was reluctant, but did. Sure enough, my blood potassium levels were low. So, he prescribed a high-dose potassium. I took it, and all my heart problems disappeared within hours, and would remain gone for extended periods of time. (Why don’t all cardiologists check electrolytes before prescribing other medications?)
Long story shortened, I didn’t want to have to make a copay and get stuck with lab bills every time I needed a refill, so I tried various over the counter brands until I found one that worked well for me. Thorne is the one I stick with because inside each capsule there are hundreds of tiny, sand-sized potassium pellets (just like my prescription had). And, whenever my arrhythmia flares up, I take 2 potassium capsules and my PVCs disappears again. The reason these small pellets are so important is because potassium in general is VERY harsh on the stomach lining and can cause gastro problems. The pellets reduce this effect because they scatter throughout the stomach. This is much better than having one large pill sitting in one spot until digested.
What I have learned is that my heavy exercise routines are probably the cause of my electrolyte depletions. I sometimes I enjoy weeks on end where I do 3+ hours of cardio a day. I sweat; my electrolytes (potassium) get used up; my PVCs flare up; and, I need to supplement. One bottle of this lasts me a good 6 to 12 months.
