In Red Wing boots I wear a size 9, double wide. I decide to go with the same size to start off and it was too long. So I returned it for a 8.5 2E. We're almost there, but now it's way too narrow, but the length was perfect. I tried one more time, this time going for the same length but something wider. Nailed it! 8.5 3E (triple wide!) and it fits perfect. Keep this in mind if you have wide feet.
So far I love the boot. Very comfortable and flexible straight out of the box. Premium feel and soft leather. I work on the waterfront, hard concrete, steel grating (trains and ships). My shoes take a beating. I'm looking forward to getting some good use out of them. I'll come back in a few months with a longer term review.
For the past 6 months I've been working as an electrician and these have been great work boots. Give me confidence while climbing ladders or waking on top the the beams I'm attic spaces. Have taken a real beating and are still very comfortable though the tread is getting warn put now which might be from the motorcycle riding. Still going to keep wearing them for a while and will be pirchasing more thorogoods next.
They have a good arch (not too high, not too shallow, just right), and a very well-fitting heel in the insole. I normally use inserts that cost a good amount of money, and I don't even need those in these boots. The leather is very supple, easy to break in, and obviously high-quality (thick leather that will last a long time!).
The sole is softer so I'm guessing they will wear out a bit quicker than some, but it is also stitched on, so you can easily get new ones put on.
Also, for all those guys out there with big feet, these shoes fit perfectly! I have size 15's, and normally can't find a thing to fit me, but these are perfect. They are worth the money, and you won't regret spending it!
Oh, and they are made in the US, so if that is something you appreciate, there you go.
