He brought you back in time so you could truly understand the culture, religious sects, and political circumstances of the time. Fine, Accessible, Scholarship

This book, published long ago, is an excellent introduction to the early history of Christianity. It emphasizes the well known Jewish origins of Jesus and describes the evolution of Christianity in the hands of others. There no shortage of subsequent scholarship. But this book is done in language that is accessible (easily readable) to non-scholars, written by a scholar. A fine overview. Please check the credentials of writers of related books. For example the author of the recent "Zealot" (Reza Aslan) lacks the background of, say, Elaine Pagels.

A good historical view of the development of Christianity. The author challenges some of the dogmas that are typically taught. Some of his conclusions are questionable, but overall a good read with what I think will be some surprises for many Christians.
