W. Lee Cozad
(Author)
Those Magnificent Mountain Movies is a compilation of films made in the San Bernardino Mountains, Hollywood's back lot for the past century. From D.W. This is an indespensible book in many ways and covers ground (literally) that too few books do. The San Bernardino mountains have been a backlot for Hollywood location shooting since the arrival of Griffith,Demille, and Dwan and probably before that. W.Lee Cozad shows us where the great silents were filmed (like Murnau's Sunrise and Fleming"s Mantrap to name a few) but also brings forgotten names back to life(like Monroe Salisbury and Thurston Hall). Also covered are a good many films from the thirties. The only qualm I have with this book is the lack of specifics in pinpointing locations in photos(which are plentiful) and text, but that's nitpicking considering the overall wealth of information. Looking forward to reading volume two and venturing to Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear to see some of my favorite movie sites!

We keep it on the coffee table in the living room. We live at Lake Arrowhead, so it's fun to browse the book. Guest love to look at it, too.

Mr. Cozad's ability to write engaging prose regarding the facisnating history of movies reminds one of Will Durant's "History of Civilization." His depth of knowledge is unmatched...it is a must read for any affcianado of the cinema.
It is a New York Times bestseller in the making!
