The book is written mostly from the perspective of the teams uncovering's, who are working with Lucas to find out who the Mechanic is and why have the killings started after a three year gap! I particularly liked his partner Bassano, not only did they make a great team, the character combination seemed an effortless read, and they gelled so well together.
Lucas is clear and precise in his thinking and is engaging. He wants to stop the Mechanic as quickly as possible, especially as each targeted family is a multi hit.
I was soon immersed in the storylines with the gritty and assured nature of the murders and although told mostly from Police Perspective it isn't dripping in details of technicalities.
This truly is an exceptional read, with a serial killer with a fascinating way of hunting the victims. which kept me involved with the plot and hooked all the way through.
This book is an impressive debut novel, and it isn't often that the first book in a series gets a 5 star rating, as you know the next will have the layers of intrigue set, but this is so clever, devious and twisty, that it deserves a 5 star.
The story flicks between Mechanic and Lucas who is on the case to catch the killer. It was actually quite scary reading the parts to do with Mechanic. They obviously have some serious issues. It’s obvious that these issues are to do with events from their past to do with their dad. Obviously no matter what someone goes through it doesn’t make it right to take someones else’s life.
The deaths of the victims are pretty brutal ones to say the least and certainly don’t make for pleasant reading but, if you are a die hard crime fan, it will certainly have you hooked!
Lucas is a really likeable guy. I felt quite sorry for him as he is getting to a time in his life where he should be taking things a bit easier but thanks to Mechanic he is having to work harder than ever.
Those That Remain is the perfect read for fans of truly twisted serial killers. There is plenty within the pages to grip and thrill the reader. Maybe even some surprises, but then you will need to read it for yourself to find out. Great start and can’t wait to see what happens in the next instalment.
