Thought Prison explores the ramifications of political correctness on language, and thus thought; its casual denial of logic and insidious reach into the realms of science and learning; its total saturation of its twin supports, the mass media and ruling elites. Once the collectively self-imposed blinkers, of good causes and good intentions, are stripped away we can see the nanny state and moral universe beyond for what it is – a catastrophic delusion that is destroying the world we know. Most of us think of political correctness in terms of its scope for irony. It provides opportunity to protect us from a vaguely troubling acceptance of an enforced orthodoxy. We are familiar with the no-go areas defined by PC taboos – race, sex (or to be PC, gender), ethnicity, sexual preference, disability, class – and indeed of it being an engineered term to suit political and scientific argument. What we may be less able to accept is that PC is something in which we are all complicit. Thought Prison examines the way we are now, and how the Western world has come to be that way. It reveals an Orwellian dystopia that instead of being characterized by a crude authoritarian elite, is supported and driven by an irrational yet equally totalitarian and all-pervasive status quo of our own making, dominating politics, economics, public administration, law, education, the military, health services – our very selves.

Employing an aphoristic, almost Nietzschean, style of prose, Charlton issues a jeremiad against "political correctness," which he identifies as a product of the left (whether socialists, communists, liberals, etc.) but as also currently infecting the center and the right, perpetuated by the mass media and an intellectual elite and representing a "triumph of the left" that threatens to > unravel modernity itself. It's unfortunately not entirely clear just exactly what he means by "political correctness." It is, at various times: a form of nihilism, a defense of pure pleasure-seeking, an irrational denial of reality (for example, of the assumed fact that the military is for men and care of young children is for women), or an attempt to privilege some groups over other groups, to cite a few examples. About the Author

BRUCE CHARLTON is Professor of Theoretical Medicine, University of Buckingham, UK and Reader in Evolutionary Psychiatry, Newcastle University, UK. Prof Charlton researches widely in evolutionary psychology and psychiatry, and on the role of scientific consensus and social mechanisms in biomedical research. From 2003 to 2010 he was editor of Medical Hypotheses. He is also an editor of The Journal of Hypotheses in the Life Sciences.

This is another subject that is a disease on Western society that divides subverts and indoctrinates. Anyone who seeks answers in regards to the term 'Political Correctness' and the mechanisms behind it should take a look at this book. His chapters on the Media are excellent. There is also a degree of uniqueness in how he views Political Correctness and looks at 'the Abstract', 'PC and original sin' I enjoyed his writing style and his unique point of view. I think he underestimates the power that the internet can have in regards to informing and potentially countering the typical mass media narrative on a number of subjects....

From the Media, Academia to Government and the workplace this concept is spreading and it needs to be countered.

Other recommendations that touch on this subject and are worthwhile reading;

Vox Days - Social Justice Warriors Always lie (easy read with practical examples on SJW tactics)
James Kalb - Against Inclusiveness (More scholarly and dense writing style - He packs alot in each sentence)

This is an extraordinary book! I've never seen such a depth of analysis, and written with great clarity. I thought I understood Political Correctness well (I've studied it for quite some time), but I'm amazed at how much there was to learn. This should be MUST reading for anyone interested in politics today. Charlton is a genius. It is hard to imagine any single person seeing so much, so well (you'll have to read it to understand what I'm talking about.) BUT, I definitely do NOT agree with everything he has written. He makes a strong case for orthodox religion as an antidote to political correctness - the only antidote. I don't agree with that at all. I believe that it is possible to have a full philosophical set of views (metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, political philosophy, etc.) that can be held passionately - and that these beliefs, if they are rational, can leave political correctness impotent. Passionately held beliefs, based in reality and reason combined with a clear understanding of Political Correctness' flawed nature is a fine antidote and one that does not require religious faith. In Western Culture we are in a war of ideologies - Christianity, Marxism, Fundamental Islam, Altruism, Rational Individualism, Collectivism, etc. The war will be one of numbers - who gains enough supporters to completely take over - in one sense, but in another sense it will be about passion and reason - both of which are powerful resources.

Charlton speaks the truth. Many things in here are partial thoughts I've almost had...but he has the gift and the knowledge to put it into words. Wow.
I can't say I agree 100% with everything he writes, but that is part of the point in having this eye-opening discussion. My one critique is that it is ultimately a bit pessimistic, because I actually believe that enough people out there can see the light... FIVE STARS from this reader!
