has a very special meaning for me. In 1960, I was in the crowd on 39th St. and Broadway, in
The Garment Center in New York City, when Kennedy, his voice hoarse from relentless campaigning, addressed the crowd about his vision of a new America and a new generation taking charge.
As an important member of the Kennedy circle, a man who had Kennedy's ear, Schlesinger draws an unforgettable portrait of the man who captured the imagination and the hopes of people, not just in America, but all over the world. Standing in that crowd on 39th St., it was easy for me to believe that this man, seasoned by his experiences in World War II, his vision shaped by a knowledge of history and America's place in it, would not be beholden to the customs and beliefs of the leaders born in earlier generations.
Schlesinger makes this point emphatically. Kennedy was born later then Adlai Stevenson and later then Lyndon Johnson. Kennedy really believed, and communicated this belief eloquently, that men and women of his generation could really make a difference. Schlesinger's focus in A THOUSAND DAYS is the Kennedy Administration's role in foreign affairs. Even with that focus, what emerges is Kennedy's refreshing escape from the conventions of previous politicians. Kennedy's choice of Douglas Dillon as Secretary of the Treasury, was a choice that Schlesinger himself originally opposed. Kennedy chose Dillon because he thought he was the best man for the job, not because of his particular political persuasion. Shlesinger remarks that Nixon might have made Dillon his appointment had he won the election.
Kennedy's confrontations with Khrushchev, The Cuban Missile Crisis, the South American venture, the Alliance for Progress are presented clearly and convincingly.
We will never know what direction this country, or the world would have taken, had John Kennedy been granted another term in office. Surely, he would have learned from his mistakes, which Schlesinger reveals. The Kennedy imagination, intellect, and belief that his administration could really do something to make the world a better place will live with all of us as long as we live.
Another important record of this moment in history is David Halberstam's THE BEST AND THE BRIGHTEST, available in a Fawcett Columbine paperback edition.

There is a lot to unpack here as Schlesinger covers a range of issues that were prominent in the Kennedy administration including foreign policy matters in Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia, along with domestic aspects pertaining to economic policy and the efforts of Kennedy to find a political balance between voices on the far-left and the far-right. Additionally, Schlesinger describes Kennedy’s interactions with various personalities within the administration including Attorney General (and the President’s brother) Robert F. Kennedy, UN Ambassador Adlai Stevenson, and Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, among others. Besides members of the cabinet, Kennedy’s relationships with international figures are also described with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev and French President Charles de Gaulle being standouts. Although intricate and well-written, the author does make his personal beliefs clear throughout his account of Kennedy’s tenure and is openly resentful of Kennedy’s Republican predecessor Dwight D. Eisenhower and Kennedy’s 1960 opponent Richard Nixon. At times his criticisms of the previously mentioned figures are understandable and decently established but at others, the author appears petty and partisan-driven. Despite his open political leanings though, Schlesinger’s book is largely effective because of his personal insight, which adds significance to important moments of Kennedy’s presidency like the Cuban Missile Crisis, his speech at American University, and visit to a divided Berlin.
Regardless of partisan beliefs, Arthur M. Schlesinger establishes that while John F. Kennedy’s time in office may have been brief, it was certainly influential during times of rapid change and even if decades have passed since Kennedy’s death and the publication of this book, a lot remains to be learned from John F. Kennedy’s mistakes and triumphs.
I find it particularly illuminating that many of the ills of American society - indeed global politics - that JFK tried to eradicate (racism/poverty in America, Russian belligerence, American foreign policy adventurism and unyielding, reflexive doctrinairism in dealing with problems abroad including the decisions in when, where & how to wage war/pursue peace) still resonate till today.
This was a man for the ages, who transcends time and will forever be a shining beacon to all those yearning for a more just, fairer world. JFK will forever be my favorite, the greatest President of the modern age the United States ever had. The world is poorer for it that he was cruelly denied the opportunity of a second term in office/post - presidential years to perpetuate/consolidate his New Frontier vision. All students of history seeking a keener understanding of the world today and those aspiring to public service via elective office or otherwise will find this a valuable reference and companion always.
Not sorry I read the book, but it could have been so much better.

profondo
senza reticenze su una stroria non conosciuta nei dettagli
non esce benissimo il periodo di kennedy purtroppo rispetto a ciò che sappiamo
As a modern reader one can also not be drawn to the similarities between the Kennedy and Obama administrations. Another thinks also becomes clear is that we will never see the likes of J.F.K or Arthur Schlesinger again for a very long while.
