Editorial Reviews

(1960) Peter Van Eyck, Gerte Frobe, Dawn Addams, Wolfgang Preiss. Fritz Lang's swan song with the fiendish Dr. Mabuse committing a series of murders in a Posh hotel that's filled with all kinds of strange scientific gadgets. Terrific climax with a tremendous car chase. A great film!

THE THOUSAND EYES OF DR. MABUSE is the last film the great German/American filmmaker Fritz Lang did, on a tight budget for European producer (and Lang admirer) Artur Brauner. The film itself is a template for the Eurospy films of the Sixties, as well as a near-classic - but given Sinister Cinema's treatment, it may as well be a pirated amateur porno! Either a dupe off of NTSC television or a downloaded video file, the film is an English dub (with German opening titles) that sits in the middle of your modern HD screen like an old .AVI file, and is barely watchable. $8.99 seems cheap until you get your copy - then paying more than the cost of the blank disc seems too expensive.

If you have a Region-Free DVD player or VLC Media Player on your PC, Eureka!'s Region 2 THE COMPLETE FRITZ LANG MABUSE BOX SET is a far better bet - you not only get THOUSAND EYES...., but also DR. MABUSE, DER SPIELER and THE TESTAMENT OF DR. MABUSE in handsome transfers with original German soundtracks as well as English dubs and numerous special features. Even at close to $50, it's worth the cost.

The Sinister Cinema version being sold here is made from the original 99 minute German version (the title and credits are in German) with the dialog dubbed into English. The film is letterboxed for the "matted" widescreen process. As a bonus, the DVD contains the rare patchwork re-release trailer in which the original title is cut out and and replaced with a title card that reads "The Eye of Evil." The print is in very good condition and at $8.99, is far more affordable than earlier releases from other companies.

At age 70, Fritz Lang returned to Germany after abandoning Hollywood in 1956. "The 1,000 Eyes of Dr. Mabuse" (1960) marked the legendary filmmaker's swan song. Despite a low budget and commercial considerations, Lang crafted an atmospheric thriller. The Mabuse sequel has its slow stretches, but the inventive assassination sequence and climactic car chase represent the director at his best. A fitting coda to Lang's career. (Please note that the Sinister Cinema DVD is the English-dubbed version in full-screen format. Unlike the original German release, this DVD includes the voice of British co-star Dawn Addams.)

I would never have bought this if I had realized it was dubbed in english over the original german, so the feeling of the acting is ruined. I haven't seen the original German Version, but am sure it is a lot better.
