Editorial Reviews

In the past, Chicane mastermind Nick Bracegirdle has been dubbed the "godfather of the Ibiza anthem", but he's come a long way since the sun drenched Balearic shores first throbbed to his chill out classics. A year in the making, Nick sums up his latest release as "a collection of life's soundtracks".

When I first heard this album, it felt like this was always meant to be the b-side to Giants. It's so low-key, and laid back, and perfect for chilling on the beach with a magnificent sunset in the distance. It lacks the heavy basslines prevalent in a few of Giants' tracks (i.e. Come Back) and the commercially radio-friendly sounds of Middledistancerunner and What am I doing here? pt. 1

It doesn't quite measure up to Far from the Maddening Crowds or Behind the Sun in terms of the quality of its tracks as some of the instrumentals blur together, but there are quite a few standouts. And, personally, I enjoy this album right off the bat more than Giants. Regardless, there are few current artists who produce trance music. And, Nick Bracegirdle continues to do a phenomenal job of producing superb trance anthems.

Incredible tracks that are already on repeat:
Windbreaks
Playing Fields
Flotsum Jetsum

To be sure, this is an essential Chicane recording for anyone whose ears perk up just a bit more when Offshore blares thru the speakers.

I rarely criticize others efforts in this area, unless I was unlucky enough to purchase something that by them that didn't match the price. Though it wasn't really much to gripe about (8.99 for mp3 compilation), I could have used my meager finances to purchase something else. At least that's what I thought after I listened to the whole set of tracks the first time. My previous review didn't give Chicane much kudos...at ALL. I even felt kinda bad for it. Then inadvertently I was listening to it a week later on my MP3 player, and found myself completely smitten. So much so, I changed my original 3 star review to 5 stars. I've listened many times since, and find myself drawn into it even further,...to the point I must now go and buy everything he has done. As a composer/songwriter myself, I know how important it is to support an artist through purchasing their music, rather than finding it on a fraud site, and I def think he deserves the support. I don't know what the heck i was thinking the first time through, but my mood must have been way off, and I will in the future correct that before panning someone's creative work. This has a great deal of detail throughout his work that belies some of the upfront simplicity, and the thematic material comes back to redevelop several times throughout. If you like music that will grab you and take you on a journey, I truly recommend Thousand Mile Stare.

This is an amazing album for anyone who loved FFTMC, Behind The Sun, and more recently the highly anticipated - and now finally available for download- Giants . Beautiful and haunting, this music seems to pierce your soul and captivate your senses. A true artist by any standards, Chicane is back and sounding better than ever.

Thousand Mile Stare showcases just how dedicated Chicane is in reproducing the sound of sunshine. From the soothing warmth of Hljóp to the kinetic pulse of Super Mouflon, every track is constructed with superb attention to detail, allowing an almost palpable light to shine through. There's a definite "Icelandic" vibe on tracks such as Sólarupprás and Hljóp featuring the vocals of Vigri which lead the listener though artfully affected vocals and shimmering pulses; the more acoustic percussion elements on these tracks (and Windbreaks) provide an excellent framework for the ethereal vocals that glide throughout. While tracks such as Goldfish and Fin De Jours may lack Chicane's signature bass lines, I find myself floating away in their delicate beauty.

If you are wondering if it's all just swirling arrangements and heartbreaking loveliness, never fear, Chicane brings the beat as always. Tracks like Flotsum And Jetsum and the title track Thousand Mile Stare will get your pulse going with their smooth beats and evolving textures.

Both masterfully crafted and sublimely moving, Thousand Mile Stare is an essential listen for all Chicane fans and a definite buy for those still unfamiliar. (Do yourself a favor and get the deluxe version, it has two tracks and some mixes not on the import CD.)

Another great set from Chicane. The whole set clocks in at 67 minutes, so hard to wrong with that much music from such a great trance artist. Some of it sounds like it is right out of Sigur Ros, but only a lot more hip. Beginning starts with what sounds like the soundtrack from WE BOUGHT A ZOO. Then it picks up as it transitions into the second track and doesn't stop from there!

I just received Chicane CD today of Thousand Mile Stare. I really enjoyed a lot! In time, some artist will change there work of songs a bit and Chicane stayed close to his previous albums with dance tunes as Flotsum and Jetsum, love this one!! Yet my all time favorite will be Far from the Maddening Crowds and "Red Skies" that always gives me the chills, how in the world he created this song, unbelievable and divine!! If your a true fan of Chicane, you will like any of his albums & have some most favorite ones. The album Giant also was great! Way to go Chicane! Look forward to many more albums you produce.
