Product Description

Perma-Coil helically coiled inserts are made of stainless steel wire that has been rolled to a carefully controlled thread form. When installed, Perma-Coil inserts adjust to a tapped hole, becoming a functional thread with a strength exceeding the original. Perma-Coil inserts and repair kits are designed to repair stripped threads in a variety of metals. Aluminum, aluminum alloys, steel, and cast iron. If the original threads can be stripped, Perma-Coil inserts can repair them. By following the detailed instructions enclosed in every Perma-Coil kit, even an inexperienced do-it-yourselfer can repair stripped threads, permanently.

Broke a 1/4-in bolt in an aluminum lawn mower engine block. (Whoever worked on the engine last did not use anti-seize compound on the bolt threads, so the steel screw galled the threads in the aluminum block, causing it to seize.) For those who read this and don't know it, high-end equipment with an aluminum engine block uses thread inserts so that steel bolts can be used and removed without the need for anti-seize compound (PermaTex). This insert kit is sold by Thread Kits under the trade mark of Perma-Coil, and it does the job just as well as the Heli-Coil brand inserts, only for a LOT less money. The user instructions are adequate, but do not address the purpose of the yellow plastic mesh. (Instructions refer to use of a "BLUE pre-winder," but the package contains nothing blue.) If the needed drill bit were included , this kit would be the ideal, "everything you need for the job" package. In their defense, the instructions do specify what size drill bit to use (11/64" for the 1/4" insert). I did not use the yellow mesh or the fictitous "blue pre-winder", but managed to install the insert successfully and without difficulty, thank you very much. As a secondary note, I have mechanic friends who shy away from thread inserts because they've had "bad luck" with them backing out of the hole during subsequent removal of the bolt. In my Air Force days, we used helical inserts religiously and never had any problem with them backing out, so I accepted this with a grain of salt. After insertion, remove the insert tang in accordance with the instructions and you should never have the backing-out problem. And, no, I did not use thread lock (Loc-tite) on the insert. When the bolt is inserted, the torque force will induce the thread insert to seize with the aluminum threads and prevent it from moving.

Background. I have been using genuine genuine Heli-Coil thread repair products for over 40 years. In this specific case I needed to repair six holes in magnesium aircraft wheels; I didn't want to pay $55 for a Heli-Coil kit to repair 6 holes so I thought I'll get this kit. BIG MISTAKE.

I subsequently bought the genuine Heli-Coil kit and fixed the six holes without a problem.

What is the difference? When I used the Heli-Coil tap, it removed a bit more material from the previously threaded hole.

Something is not right with this brand.

I needed to repair a stripped out thread in my cam timing cover. The thread is 8-32, which is a fairly small thread. There are two threaded holes that attached the point plate on my motorcycle and someone in the past simply stripped out one of the holes. I decided to drill and install these inserts in both threaded holes. I've found Helicoils to provide stronger threads than the plain aluminum threads.

This kit provided everything I needed except the standard drill bit, which I already had. It installed easy and now the threads are good and my ignition plate is secure.

I had no problems using the kit. I bought it to repair a vintage cabinet drawer pull that could not be replaced. I clamped the drawer pull in a vise and used a drill press to drill the required new diameter hole for the larger tap. The insert went smoothly into the newly tapped hole. The entire job took no more than 10 minutes.

As other people have mentioned, this kit does not include the necessary 11/64 drill bit but I already had one. This kit also does not include the blue pre-threader but I didn't need it.

The kit did what I needed for less cost than the Heli-Coil kit.

Works great and cheaper than Helicoil. I've read that the inserts are harder as well. Not sure if the two systems are compatible.
Requires an 11/64 drill.

I have used a bunch of these, and they all worked perfectly. These can save you a lot of money depending on the item that is to be repaired.
