Three Daughters starts out rather slowly, but the pace picks up as the characters evolve. Each character enters as she is born and develops her family relationships. As the first daughter matures she becomes mother to the second daughter who later becomes mother to the third daughter. Fathers play an important part in the development of each of these women and their lives are filled with many difficult and some rewarding experiences. Readers shouldn't give up on the opening slow pace of the book as the 600 + pages soon turn in to a "hard to put down" novel.
If the reader is interested in Middle East history, this book takes place during the late 19th century and continues through World War I and on to World War II.

I rarely give 5 stars to books unless they are exceptional. I would actually rate this 4 1/2 stars because it is not the ultimate. However, that being said, this is a long book. It could actually be cut down to 3 books because it covers several generations. I especially loved the first part of the story because it had so much historical information about the middle east and the customs of the Arabs.
The writing was fluent, steady and easy to read. I didn't skip a page!!! This is the type of book that you take your time and keep reviewing the lineage so that you can keep track of the families.
Good effort the the author.

It's a bit of a slow story, but the author showed real effort in providing realistic detail to the historical aspects and I found myself being drawn in by the story of each of the heroines. Their tragedy was also their trial of fire. It's always wonderful to read of how a person can overcome their circumstances and emerge triumphant

One of those books. Loved it. Hungry to get to the end and to know each character's fate, but I also wanted the story to never end. And I guess it really doesn't. I loved these flawed, but very human and appealing people. Even though I have finished the book somehow these people are living their lives, finding love and fulfillment in some alternate universe. I am sure there are REAL people actually living these kinds of experiences. Delighted to learn so much more about Palestinian culture, and I appreciate how deftly the author unfolded historical events, wove cultures and experiences together in the lives of her characters.

Three Daughters was an expansive novel, covering a very interesting time in the middle east. The story of several generations was highly engaging, and the writing was excellent. The resilience shown in the women was powerful, particularly as societies and cultures changed. I would have given this the fifth star but I felt there was limited resolve of the situations in the final main character and her nemesis - as if the author just got tired of writing. But overall, a very worthwhile read.

This was an ambitious novel: the author presented historical summaries as a backdrop throughout much of the book - and amazed me with her ability to tie together what was happening around the world in a way that brought it home to the characters. It wasn't exactly a "page turner" - but in a crazy way that somehow added strength to the book: there was a comforting steadiness to the story as it went through three generations of compelling characters! The story reminded me of Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese - and in all fairness to the author, maybe because I found myself comparing the book to that masterpiece, it may be why I'm giving it four stars instead of five. All in all, a great read, an intelligent author!

My rating is probably related to the fact that --although I had purchased the book a while back-- I began to read it upon arrival for a fairly extended stay in Jordan. Serendipitous, but important detail. About a hundred years of history about the Middle East, the Turkish rule of these lands, WWI and WWII effects on the region, customs, relationsips among people of different origins and religions through the eyes, minds and hearts of three women... and most of the action happens only a few km from where I am leaving. All of that notwithstanding --or because of all of that... I will never know-- I remained engaged throughout the book, the lives of the three daughters and somehow believed most of it (only a couple of points in the plot seemed a bit far-fetched).

I loved it and helped me understand a detail or two about this beautiful land and marvelous people!

A truly encompassing story of the journey and life experiences of three women. I found myself drawn into their struggles , their heart aches and joys and triumphs. On one hand each of them faced such different experiences relying so much on the culture and values and lifestyles of the era they grew up in. And yet on the other there was a similaries that bridged generations. Their lives all centered on family, children and their unique heritage and traditions. Spanning over three generations the final granddaughter, daughter, wife mother coming of age as modern conveniences begin to take hold and women started gradually moving out of their expected roles of housekeeping cooking and childrearing and ventured out into the world. To me it shows that while in many instances things have changed exponentially in other ways we still find ourselves as someone's daughter, someone's wife, someone's mother and these roles are the ones that define our lives.

Never have 700 pages read so quickly. This is a marvelous saga of a family over several generations. Each generation faces fresh yet oddly similar conflicts and challenges. It is beautifully written historical literature that begins in the late 1800s and takes the reader into the 1955s while visiting England and the U.S. Although set in old Palestine it is really intercultural and addresses issues shared by many races, religions, cultures and ages. It is a book that would be appealing to mature men and women. I highly recommend it.

This is a long and winding story about three generations of women full of life lust and love.
If you like that sort of read then this is for you. I should mention that it's very well written.
