Soon another murder is committed with the accused someone close to Jane. Jane assigns this case to her lead detective while Jane continues to investigate the arson murders. Jane also gets word that there are people illegally camping on a small island near the harbor. She and Reid arrive on the island to find that there are indeed people living there, and they are members of the cult she and Reid grew up in. Their leader is not a nice man and has committed several crimes, including the murder of Reid’s mother many years ago while they were all living in the cult. No proof was ever discovered of this murder, but Reid knows the truth. Jane confronts her father, with whom she has a difficult relationship with to say the least, about this old murder but he isn’t forthcoming with information. Jane decides to ask her estranged mother about this and that opens up a can of worms. Whew! Jane is under a lot of pressure, both personally and professionally. How will she deal with this? Are any of these murders related?
This was one of the best series by this author in my opinion. I enjoyed reading about Jane’s fledgling faith grow and be lived out in her life. She really had to cling to the Lord in this third novel as murder hit close to home and heart. Her romantic relationship with Reid was a joy to read. Reid’s patience and faith were on full display as well. I recommend reading the three novels in the series in order as Chief Hardy’s personal story line runs from one book to the next. I’m looking forward to this author’s next suspense-filled novel!
I enjoyed this series very much.
Going from a scared little girl, this king she'd lost her mother and baby in a fire, to a grown woman who discovered a big secret and got back what she'd lost.
A wonderful adventure.
Jane, the Chief of Police in Pelican Harbor gets pulled into a house fire because of the questionable death of the homeowner as well as the death of one of the firefighters. While involved in this investigation, another suspicious death occurs outside of the home of Reid, the father of her son, Will. This quickly becomes complicated and heartbreaking when 15 year old Will is arrested for murder. Jane suspects the two murders could be connected and the success of solving them lies in the memory of a three day trip she took with her Mother many years ago. Regrettably, she has absolutely no memory of those three days.
Both Jane and Reid were raised in a cult setting where they were married at a young age, although not legally. Will was raised by Reid, while Jane had been told the baby died. To complicate an unusual, heartbreaking situation, Reid and Will move to the town where Jane lives. Just when Jane and Reid are working at rebuilding a friendship and Jane is getting to know her son, the the issue of trust that she is a struggle for Jane, raises it's ugly head. Can and should Jane be trusting Reid?
This book has many unexpected twists and turns that will keep the pages turning. Colleen Coble once again has another 5 star series.
