The Single Most Important Text in the History of Western Occultism

The vast store of magical lore within the Three Books of Occult Philosophy has been an essential resource for occultists since its original publication nearly five centuries ago. In this hardcover edition, editor Donald Tyson presents these writings in their complete form, free from the hundreds of errors made in the original translation and supplemented by notes and explanations to contextualize the material for the modern reader.

The most complete repository of Pagan and Neoplatonic magic ever compiled, this book is packed with material you will not find elsewhere, including copious extracts on magic from obscure or lost works by Pythagoras, Pliny the Elder, Cicero, Ptolemy, Plato, Aristotle, and many other authorities. Donald Tyson's detailed annotations clarify difficult references and provide origins of quotations, expanding upon them as necessary in order to make Agrippa's work more accessible.

As well as providing extensive insight into the foundations of the Western esoteric tradition, the Three Books of Occult Philosophy is the ultimate "how-to" for magical workings. It describes how to work all manner of divination and magic in such clear and useful detail that it is still the guide for modern techniques. And the extensive supplementary material―including biographical and geographical dictionaries and appendices―provides quick reference to many previously obscure matters in classical magic.

Two ripped pages and a smudge on an expensive book.

Two ripped pages and a smudge on an expensive book.
I have to say, the book is awesome, there is so much information that was missing in my mind, that i can tell will be brought together with a little reading. What i am upset about is that i bought a super expensive version of the book in a hardcopy edition because i collect occult grimoires and upon opening the box and inspection of the books, this one not only had a smudge on the white part that is visible when the book is closed, when i opened the book and was excited to look through the pages to see the pictures and content, there were two ripped pages. I don't know if they resold this when someone sent it back or what. I know its a large book with large amount of pages, but is it too hard to inspect the book to make sure a book meant as a collection piece, sold as brand new, is actually intact??? Usually the only reason people spent vastly larger amounts on hard cover additions is for the look of it so that they have a pristine beautiful collectors piece. I don't have the money to pay for the postage right now to send it back for another one, and that is such a nuisance and costs money. The book is amazing, but amazon needs to at least try a little harder making sure collectors pieces are actually in the condition that they say they are.

Regardless of what the 1-2 star reviews say, especially about the first book (Natural Magic), this is a great book for the studious and dedicated ceremonial magician to have. Alongside Skinner’s Magician’s Tables, The Elucidation of Necromancy, and the Clavicus of Solomon.

Very interesting so far! The author who translates this has definitely done his homework and exhausted all his translations with a fine comb and even shows you this by his referancing of other literature and explanation of why he translates things a certain way.

The back story is great as well. Really gives the book context. Without the back sotry you would lose a lot from the value this book provides.

I must have been blinded by the price and missed the description information on this edition. I thought I was buying the 3rd edition, 3 book set, of this publication. My fault, it clearly says its Donald Tyson's edition. I'm not ot too dissapointed, its still a great deal. The book arrived in mint condition. Overall happy with the purchase, this edition has lots of foot notes for further reserch.

I have not finish the book, but so far it's good. I'm half way done with it. It has a lot of information about the occult. Plus the notes at the end of every chapter left by the author was a nice touch. I had to learn how to understand some old English words. Which the notes left by the author help, but some words I had to look up on my own to get a better understanding of it. Thanks google. Now I understand a lot of old English now. Which is not a bad thing.

It's not really a type of book. If you're looking for a good story. It just explain certain stuff about the occult, and practice. Which is not a bad thing. It gives you the information, and you can look up more about it on your own. Thanks to the book. I was able to find other books, people, and history to look more in to.

Good to add to the collection.

Classic book, readable size font, soft paper that doesn't rip when riffled through for notes. The translation in general and all of the notes and appendices are indispensable. An classic for occultism, and even a good gift for academic family members who enjoy curiosities. Indispensable for the occult inclined, but also grounded and academic enough it can find it's place on most study's bookshelves.

If you're tired of reading PDFs or you're just getting into this "Western Occult" business, you've gotta get this. This is a great version of this and includes everything from Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy, aka the FOUNDATION for this mess of Western Occult tradition that has inspired everything from the terribly grifty "New Age" The Secret type crap to Aleister Crowley's Thelema. Basically, if you want a firm foundation in Occultism, but this.

Agrippa's books have been the go-to source for western esotericists for a long time. This is a good edition and far cheaper than it has any right to be, it shouldn't be a difficult buy at all.

I wasn’t sure if I needed this book as I already had one version, the so- called uncensored and unabridged version. To anybody on the fence that already owns a different version and isn’t sure whether or not to go for this one too; GET THIS VERSION. Seriously, you will be glad that you did.

4.0 out of 5 stars Producto que vale la pena (Pasta dura editorial Llewelyn)
Reviewed in Mexico on February 5, 2022
