If the 1994 book titled "The Hot Zone" didn't terrorize you, maybe this won't either. Nonetheless, if you are looking for another way humans can end up dead, this book will certainly give you many scenarios for our demise. It will do that and more. There are 30 chapters in this volume, so I won't repeat the titles of them all. However, the book is broken up into 6 major sections and those are: 1- An Introduction to Viruses and Emerging Infectious Diseases; 2- The Historical Threat of Pandemic Influenza; 3- Pandemics and the Problem of Modern Infrastructure Complexity; 4- Current United States Pandemic Influenza Planning; 5- Additional Major Problems in Pandemic Preparedness; and, 6- Developing New Solutions for Pandemic Influenza Preparedness. That's a lot of beef. The recounting of the 1918 influenza pandemic was enlightening, with much information not normally recounted, especially the shortcomings of the response of the city of Philadelphia. The authors lay out a summary of the response to the Ebola threat; and also discuss the plans that are in place for dealing with future pandemics. It should be a wake up for all those involved in the planning of such responses; as the authors conclude that "none of the current approaches is funded or up to the needs of today." Furthermore, the authors feel "it is only a matter of time until the next pandemic influenza strain or other RNA virus, results in a pandemic disease of high lethality." I do love the title of the book. I was always amused by the countdown clock of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists. However, I don't know about 3 seconds to midnight; I still believe man will destroy man before almost anything else will wipe out the species. Another favorite covered topic for me was the "Disaster Train." That's a concept adapted from a DoD implementation, and it appears to be very scalable for a true pandemic situation. The proposal for a long duration microbial observatory was of course another favorite topic. I could feel at home in that observatory as I do within my own astronomical observatory; although for very different purposes. Most disappointing aspect of book for me was the lack of an index. With all the information packed within; that is certainly something I would have liked to see incorporated. This book reminded me of another disaster scenario book titled "Death from the Skies" by Phil Plait. As I said, I wonder what will kill off humankind first.

Great, thorough book about pandemics, and how woefully unprepared we would be in the face of a pandemic with high mortality rates. Discusses the science in easy-to-follow prose with superb illustrations and graphs. In my volunteer role helping rollout the local health initiative (MRC) to vaccinate school age children during the 2009 pandemic I understand somewhat how difficult it would be to coordinate a response to a more serious event.
However I do think the 1918 flu can never be repeated simply because we have instantaneous communication avenues which would help with social distancing. Also historically pandemics have been getting progressively milder through the 1900's; the 2009 H1N1 the mildest of all most people not even being aware they had it based on antibodies. Still, it seems a good preparedness excercise to think through the challenges.

Just kidding, but this book does make one's blood run cold. I'm only 30% into it, and read 70% fiction/30% non-fiction, but I can't put this one down. I strained a bit to follow the mechanics of virus section, but that's just me...the authors have made it as accessible as possible, I think, considering the complexity of the subject matter. One thing is perfectly clear; we are pathetically vulnerable. The descriptions of government efforts to be prepared for a pandemic are depressingly familiar to anyone who's long observed bureaucracy at work. This book cries out for an unabridged audio version. I would buy it again in a heartbeat if available. I annotate all of my Kindle books extensively, then export my highlights and notes to Excel and PDF when I'm done for quick reference and review. I'm sure I'll be re-reading this book again in a month or so, but an audio version would be a blessing.

Tragically, it'll likely take a sobering After Action Report of the deadly toll of the next virus gone wild before many come to appreciate how well laid out both the threats & solutions were already served up in advance here in 'Three Seconds Until Midnight'.

This long time pandemic expert lays out what happened in previous pandemics and the critical need for governments and citizens to be prepared. If not prepared there is likely too little time to get things done in time to save lives. This book helped me prepare mentally for the Chinese corona virus now in the US and around the world.

Only on p76 as of this writing, but my main complaint is that there clearly was no editor involved in the production of this book. Sloppy grammar, duplicate paragraphs, arbitrary and inconsistent capitalization, typos....it distracts from and lowers the credibility of what is probably a pretty informative book. But the deeper I get into it, the sloppier it becomes. Frustrating.

This book is written by doctors specializing in infectious diseases before COVID-19 outbreak, but it explains RNA viruses. COVID-19 is one of them. This book explains the need for national preparedness to pandemics, and shows that the nation was not prepared by 2017.

Interesting and timely but English language skills need improvement

The author, who are highly educated scientists, are critical of world response to infections such as COVID-19. They present many useful facts about previous pandemics and point out the need for global cooperation and multi-level governmental strategies in handling then. I didn't understand that this task was as complex as it is.
Unfortunately, I had to reread quite a number of passages so that I could get past grammar mistakes.

Every prediction he made was 100% accurate

I read this book in November 2019, and ordered a couple of boxes of N95 masks and nitrile gloves back then after reading his prediction of massive mask, glove, and hand sanitizer shortages in the next pandemic. Well, here we are, and every prediction he made was dead-on. His predictions were fascinating pre-COVID, now they’re frightening. Technical, and dry in parts, but he sources everything, and it’s all based on hard data, not emotions. A must read.

What should have been done

Enjoyable, scary book to read during King Flu house arrest. Learn what SHOULD have been done years ago. The pandemic "crisis" unfolded just as the authors suggested.
