The book description gives a sneak preview; ‘Udi, a married man, is plagued by guilt feelings after his first night with Rona, also married. He weighs his guilt against his attraction to her and does not know what to do. He finds himself involved in an intense, insane, daily relationship with Rona. Udi and his wife are rigid and distant with one another. Rona would leave her husband but wants commitment; Udi is totally in love and desperately confused. His mother begs him to help her with his increasingly demented father. He is pulled in three directions and has to make up his mind: which relationship in his life is going to last longer?
Towards the end, Udi has to face numerous sad realities. “Why is this happening to me?” he wonders. He asks for the strength to go through with it all, now that he has probably reached bottom. Then a refreshing new thought comes to his mind: It is time for me to take hold of the wheel of my life!’
Now, if that’s not enough to whet your appetite, I don’t know what will. But if you want to find out what happens, you’ll just have to turn the pages for yourself! However, I will say it was well worth the read. It’s my first time reading this author and I must say I was very impressed.
Captivating and commendable, this work had me immersed from the beginning. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. There are plenty of attention-grabbing moments in this page turner that will take the reader on a truly mesmerizing journey.
It’s one of those books that comes along occasionally that make you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader.
If this book is anything to go by, I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading more from Israel Shur in the future. I would definitely recommend this book and would love to see it adapted for the Silver Screen. I honestly think it would make a fantastic movie. A well-deserved five stars.
The book has nice elaborated characters and realistic approach to problems which occur to the main character, Udi. His life is what we could call a typical life. Almost happy marriage but unhappy enough for Udi to find happiness somewhere else. Which is not a big problem if he wanted to be just an affair. But the woman also married like Udi, wants more, wants commitment. And that is the main problem for Udi. he is not a guy for commitments, as I could perceive him. And that picture of him, as a man who doesn't know/want to commit himself, growing when in his already messy life steps his mother asking him to take more care for his father who is ill. Udi can't stand all those requests.
And this is a part of the book where every one of us can identify with. How to make a decision where and when and to whom give your time, your attention, your love. Relationships are hard to maintain, decisions which to and how to maintain are even harder to make.
“Three Separations” is a very well written and executed book that has transformed a simple plot into a good book with a realistic approach towards life. The narration is good with detailed description. The language is simple and easy to comprehend.
I liked the ending of the story where Udi, the male protagonist, once again takes charge of his own life instead of drowning him in depression.
The cover of the book is beautiful though misleading. I could not find any relationship with the cover image and the story. The title is apt and gives a faint idea of the ending.
Overall, “Three Separations” is a good, realistic and enjoyable read. Recommended to readers who are looking to read a simple yet thought provoking book.
