Editorial Reviews

A Perfect Circle, the multi-platinum rock band helmed by Maynard James Keenan (TOOL, Puscifer) and Billy Howerdel (Ashes Divide), issue THREE SIXTY, the outfit's first greatest hits collection.

The release also includes A Perfect Circle's first new original, studio recording in a decade with the inclusion of 'By And Down,' a song written after the band returned from their self-imposed hiatus for a series of live performances throughout 2010 and 2011.

'Billy and I created A Perfect Circle out of a now long-running friendship, and I think the music we have made reflects that personal connection and has given us the ability to further develop and trust our intuition,' explained Keenan. 'I feel THREE SIXTY is an accurate representation of that friendship and those instincts.'

A Perfect Circle formed in the late '90s with Keenan and Howerdel making up the core of the band with a number of well-known musicians having recorded and/or toured with the outfit including James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins), Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens of the Stone Age, Failure), Paz Lenchantin (Entrance Band, Zwan), Jeordie White (Marilyn Manson), Josh Freese (The Vandals, Devo) and Tim Alexander (Primus).

The band released their first album, Mer de Noms in 2000, which debuted in the Top 5 on Billboard's Top 200 and quickly established the group as one of rock music's biggest bands of the new millennium. Following extensive international touring, A Perfect Circle began work on Thirteenth Step which saw a late 2003 release and landed at #2 on Billboard's Top 200 in its debut week. The outfit's third release, a covers' album titled eMOTIVe, was released on Election Day 2004 and featured re-imagined versions of songs by a varied group of artists including John Lennon, Black Flag, Joni Mitchell and Devo. Following the release of eMOTIVe, Keenan and Howerdel focused on their individual projects with Keenan working on TOOL's 10,000 Days and launching the multimedia electro-rock outfit Puscifer and Howerdel creating Ashes Divide. A Perfect Circle has sold over five million albums worldwide.

A Perfect Circle is no stranger to inessential releases. After releasing two solid records (Mer de Noms, Thirteenth Step), the band was done in spirit, but not in contract. The band’s Virgin Records contract stipulated a set number of releases, so in 2004, the band released eMOTIVe and aMOTION1 within quick succession. Shortly after, they went on an indefinite hiatus, and I remember, as a fan, being very upset by this news. Partially because it was quite possible one of my favorite bands had broken up, and partially because I hated that A Perfect Circle chose to end its career with eMOTIVe and aMOTION, two albums that put a sour taste in everyone’s mouth. It only makes sense, then, in the context of the band’s career, that they would break their silence not with an EP, or with a full-length record, but with a greatest hits package and a live concert series2.

If you’re an A Perfect Circle fan, chances are clicked on this link just to read about one song: “By And Down”. The song is the first and only track to be released since the band went inactive in 2004. In the time before iTunes, songs like this were a way to trick long-time listeners into buying another album; I remember buying Alice In Chains’ greatest hits just for “Get Born Again”, or Nirvana’s for “You Know You’re Right.” If Three Sixty were released in that savage, pre-iTunes world, “By And Down” wouldn’t be worth your $13.99. However, today, you don’t have to buy a bunch of songs you already have to get to this new single – you just have to fork up $1.29. Unfortunately, the song is not that great. In fact, if this was featured on Mer de Noms or Thirteenth Step, I can’t imagine this song working its way onto this greatest hits collection.

There are certain bands that you just don't expect to release a Greatest Hits album. For some bands, a greatest hits compilation would break up the smooth flow of their records, a flow that they work extra-hard on producing. Other bands don't release Greatest Hits simply because they are against the concept of rounding up their most popular tracks and putting them all out on one album. Sometimes, if a band only has a few albums, a Greatest Hits record would be unnecessary when one could just buy all of their studio efforts.

I don't think it would be that far-fetched if I said that I was not expecting A Perfect Circle to release a greatest hits album.

First of all, Maynard is pretty open about his views on greatest hits compilations; he doesn't release any Tool material on iTunes because he wants people to listen to the albums from front to back and not as individual songs. He did allow APC albums to be sold, though, most likely due to Billy Howerdel and James Iha's influence. With that in mind, maybe it's not so crazy that one man's opinion was vetoed out by the rest of the band. Still, there's a certain flow to albums like Mer de Noms that just get interrupted when tracks that originally transition nicely into each other are haphazardly misplaced on the track listing. That one section of Mer de Noms from "Judith" all the way from "Sleeping Beauty" is full of flawless transition from brash to calm, creating a perfect flow of balanced emotion. Other bands, like Radiohead, proved that releasing these compilations can completely annihilate what made their individual albums so good in the first place.

"Greatest Hits" corporate version plus one new song. If you don't have any APC albums this is the one to get. APC fans are better off downloading the new track and buying their live abulms.

I am particularly upset about the absence of notable tracks such as Pet but even more so that someone like me who already owns all but By and Down must purchase the entire album to get it. Lame.

Great songs, but I already own them on the previous 3 EPs. After 8+ years w/o a new album long-time fans get a Greatest Hits album? Come on Reverend...
If you are new to the band and would like a good compilation album this is for you - otherwise for experienced fans this is a waste of money! I bought it nonetheless for the new track...

The most haunting compelling version of "Gravity" that I have ever heard. Blows the other releases that I've heard away. And "By and Down" is awesome. Definitely for fans and newcomers alike, if you ask me.

If you're just finding out about this band, I recommend you buy this album as your full introduction to their amazing sound. I have watched these guys live and can not say enough about the side project of some of our favorite TOOL members.

Having always loved A Perfect Circle, I was thrilled when I heard "By and Down" on the radio. I didn't know there was anything new coming out, so it was quite a pleasant surprise. I have all the other albums, so I have all the other songs. I bought the disc because the MP3 download was included, so I got to enjoy the new music right away.
If you like A Perfect Circle (or Tool or Pusifer, anything Maynard James Keenan), you'll enjoy this album.
