Lam-dre Preliminaries

The Three Vision belongs to the Lam-dre lineage related to Sutrayana. These are the preliminaries teachings and practices common to all tibetan buddhist schools, therefore it is the first part of a long route of practice in the Sakya school.

The first Vision is the Impure Vision where is explained the Faith from which the whole path starts, than Refuge, and a long detailed teachings on each one of the Four Thoughts that Turn the Mind toward the Dharma.
The second Vision is the Vision of the Experience, and consist in the cultivation of Bodhicitta and a short section dedicated to the practice of shamatha and vipashyana. The vipashyana section is the most interesting of the whole book. The author approaches the emptiness of the Nature of the mind from de Madhyamaka perspective and gives detailed instructions for the practice of insight into this Nature. The chapter close with an introduction to Vajrayana.
The third, Pure Vision, is a short description in three parts of the qualities and characteristics of the full Awakened state.

There is also a long commentary accompaning this text by the late Deshung Rinpoche called The Three Levels of Spiritual Perception: A Commentary on The Three Visions . Highly recommended.
