Good introduction to Epic Fantasy genre for a newbie.

Just got done with this and really enjoyed it. Epic Fantasy is not in my wheelhouse, but I have been enjoying 'Game of Thrones' and 'Vikings' and those really helped me with some of the context of the characters and jobs (meadmonger? really?) and relationships and vocabulary (shieldwall!).

Liked the way author wrote the protagonist's experience switching from the reality-present, to the alternative fantasy-present. I don't ever recall reading that style before, but it works to make me think what is happening might be in slow-motion or in a different reality. I didn't really get it at first, but the more I read then it became much easier to absorb. Really interesting way to tell the story, and I will be looking for this 'switch' in the upcoming books in the series.

Characters are strongly defined, and it is very cinematic in the telling. Can easily see this as a movie, I picture Mickey Rourke or Johnny Depp playing one of the colorful characters in the movie version. The tertiary characters are quite interesting, too, and I hope they will show up in the next books. Am pretty sure I will have to re-read this first book just before reading the next, in order to re-familiarize with all the characters and history.

I am a huge book lover, and I particularly love the fantasy genre. I have to say, I really enjoyed this book. It is hard to do a book review without giving away the story and the book. That takes the fun out of reading, so I'll start with how I really like how the author wrote. Sometimes it is hard to balance a switch in realms or timeframes but here it was written well with no confusion. I particularly loved the concept behind the wells. Not just portals but more of the death and rebirth aspect with them. I am deeply interested to read more books from the same world, and kind of disappointed this wasn't a trilogy book. Although I expect more to be added creating a series of separate stories. Especially since we really only focused on one well. While majority of the book stuck with humans I was really pleasantly surprised when kelpies and some myth creatures came into play.
Overall it was Well written with an interesting hook and concept. I will be rereading this book again.

Terry must have a leprechaun in the family tree or down the family well. This is a great blend of Celtic mythology, Erse word descendants, her student"s world, and a new (or ancient) fantasy world rivaling those of Tolkien and Dodgson.
She fronts an essential of our human condition: we live in different worlds. It is always ourselves and the outside world, body and soul, inkwell and words, writer and words, words and story, story and reader, reality and fantasy, user and computer, man and machine, "conscious and subconscious," life and death, and maybe a few others.
Terry is a benevolent guardian of these wells that portal transitions, that dig into the our earth and find deep riches, that surface a fountain spring of delight. Well done!

I found this to be a most enjoyable fantasy. The story takes place in two very different worlds, one is the modern world of here and now, and the other an apparently ancient and fantastical place where kings and queens still battle over castles and lands and, of course, their inheritances. Both worlds are connected by magical wells that allow travel between realms or even for an entity to inhabit both in some form or another.
The descriptions were marvelously well done with believable characters that I really cared about performing articulate and well thought-out story arcs and rituals that in total built a very compelling narrative. The tension rose nicely as the story progressed and left me with just enough of a cliffhanger that I want and need to read the next book that is hopefully coming in this series. Very Well Done!

I loved the writing style, attention to detail, depth of characters and sense of humor. The main character had my attention from the very beginning. A lot of effort and love went into it, you can tell. I'll be looking for more from this author. Humor doesn't feel forced but it does sometimes feel out of place. It works well.. The real strong point I feel is when the drama comes. The seriousness. The author does a great job making you feel a sense of dread or heaviness of the situation.
