Our first contact with Rita is as she is mentally grumbling about drawing the short straw and getting stuck with garbage detail – literally – as she has been tasked with transporting valuable recyclables from their pickup site to the ship. While she is in the midst of bemoaning getting left out of the planet’s annual “celebration of the gods’ gift of love and desire” she makes a discovery that is far better than any sight she suspected she was missing at the festival … a gorgeous naked Banjali male, bound, gagged, and injured in the recycle bin. By the way, Banjali have wings and their males have an extremely intriguing anatomical feature that I couldn’t decide whether to laugh about or be jealous of Rita for getting to experience. But Rita’s discovery soon puts her and the crew in danger once the people responsible for dumping Drax in the bin learned that she had found him. What ensues is an action-packed thrill ride as Drax, Rita, and the crew of the Malcolm attempt to thwart a plot to start an intergalactic conflict between Drax’s home planet of Banjali and San’bal, the planet they’re currently visiting.Read more ›
Rita is an ordinary enough human who has spent her life in space, searching out new places and experiences, but is also loyal to her crew, a talented mechanic and compassionate enough to rescue a beaten up birdman from a recycling bin and keep him safe, even when the local police come looking for him. She’s also turned on by danger and not adverse to getting it on with aforementioned birdman, who also happens to be incredibly sexy. And she’s also smart, thinks on her feet and is not afraid to put herself in danger to save her friends.
Luckily Drax is every bit her equal, but with wings. He might not be at his best for most of this book – being wounded and slightly low on funds, and er, clothes – but he proves himself capable when the moment counts. He also knows a good thing when he finds one, and I love that he never dismisses Rita as being less than him, even when others around him try to. Did I mention that he was sexy, ’cause he really is. He’s fun too and has a surprising amount of control over those feathers of his.
But if those two aren’t enough for you, the Malcolm's crew is an interesting bunch, from a drunk ex-soldier with a surprising store of worldly wisdom, to the flirtatious captain and his big, bad husband, to the playful cat-girl with secrets and surprises of her own.Read more ›
