Thrill Me is a fun, light-hearted, one day read. It is not over the top steamy, or incredibly boring, and has good character development and plot. The story is a little tame; it's pretty obvious what is going to happen from the first chapter, and there are no surprises. The tension and what drove the characters apart in the first place was a little contrived, and their reunion was a case of "what took you so long". Having said that, however, Susan Mallery's writing is top notch and a novel like Thrill Me is a pleasant diversion for a few hours. I really like that these characters are believable, they behave in character and act like the age they are supposed to be, and the careers that the characters have are well researched and seem very realistic. It truly feels like you've dropped into a real place, and I enjoy that. So far, I've looked forward to every one of her books as they come out, and I haven't been disappointed yet. Keep them coming, Ms. Mallery, and I'll keep reading!
This book of the series portrayed Del and Maya. They were very much in love, but issues of not revealing Maya's real reason for breaking Del"s heart minus not letting him in to the real truth made their ten years separation difficult, to say the least. They will have good times during their working side by side and some difficult times which will prevent their working together-at all. The few flaws coming from Del and Maya will keep you guessing right up until the end. I so enjoy her endings as they seldom let you
I an purposely omitting the one most important jest of this great book. It was such a shocker to me which keeps me coming back for many more unexpected plots that make Susan Mallery the great author she most certainly is.
I hope your feelings for this book will be as entertaining.
Susan Mallery does this well.
In “Thrill Me,” two secondary characters from earlier books in the series take center stage. Maya Farlow came to Fool’s Gold at sixteen when her mother’s most recent of her serial boyfriends brought them to the Nicholson ranch. It was the first time in her life that Maya felt loved or cared for. Del Mitchell, a good friend to the Nicholson boys, and Maya first became friends, then lovers by the time she was eighteen. Del asked her to marry him. Maya originally liked the idea, but her history growing up made it impossible for her to trust anyone. She has never witnessed a loving relationship. His proposal terrified her, and she abruptly dumped him – brutally.
Mayor Marsha recently hired Maya away from her TV job in Los Angeles to be Fool’s Gold communication director. Her first task is to develop a series of PR videos promoting tourism in Fool’s Gold. They agree that they need someone moderately well-known to participate in and narrate the videos. Mayor Marsha has the perfect solution – Del Mitchell is back in town f or a month or two, and she has hired him for the role.
Both of them are surprised. Both think they have outgrown their past, so they should be able to work together. The also each realize a continuing attraction, but neither of them are ready to trust the other in a romantic relationship. As they work together, they begin to build a shared relationship beyond their work – and then it blows up again.
Very well done.
I’m glad that Maya’s story continued from Kiss Me. I enjoyed reading about the relationship she had with Del years ago and also glad that they got to reconnect in this story. I really didn’t care for Del’s father (too arrogant and self-absorbed) and also didn’t like the pressure Del’s mother put on Maya to keep her “secret”.
One of the things that I always enjoy in Susan’s writings is that she brings real life circumstances into stories that some of us have had happen in our lives.
As always, I like that characters from past books are always mentioned. I absolutely love Eddie and Gladys and their show on cable access is certainly something I’d want to watch. Who wouldn’t want to see a naked butt contest? We also see that while they are “crazy” old ladies they are also caring and faithful to friends. We find that they help residents in Fool’s Gold financially when they need help but it is always done anonymously.
This wasn't one of my favorite stories but I still enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to read about the other Mitchell brother.
