Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Brooklyn quartet Little Women creates music whose aim
is transcendence via brutally precise sonic assault and
ascendant melodies, attacking written and improvised
material with equal ferocity. The group s sound distilled
from a broad range of influences that stretch from free
jazz through math metal, punk rock, pop music, and
harsh noise. Throat is a suite in seven sections fully
designed to be taken in as a whole; it is their full-length
debut following their 2008 EP, Teeth, on the Sockets/
Gilgongo labels. Throat was recorded and mixed by Andy
Taub at Brooklyn Recording and features cover art by
renowned guitar maestro Mick Barr (of Orthrelm/Ocrilim).

Review

"Staggering. There are those times when you hear a band and think, "Everyone has to hear this." .. First you react to the emotion that is so raw, so audible. These guys are ripping their guts out, you think. And so they are. .. It has structure and elegance in a tornado of noise, and beauty that cuts through the maelstrom like a ray of light." -- Kevin Williams, Chicago Tribune, April 1, 2010

This is my first ever review of anything on the web. Little Women deserve to be heard. I just saw them live in Chicago and they played Throat in its entirety. I was awed by the show. I purchased the album and love it.

Throat is not for the faint of heart. It is intense and visceral. I am pretty sure the album was meant to be heard as cohesive whole and not as individual tracks. Individual tracks aren't bad so much as they contribute to the whole more than they stand on their own. The whole isn't greater that the some of the parts it is just easier to comprehend.

I think the album is great. I'm not the most educated jazz-head but I am a pretty avid music listener and I've never heard anything like this. Peter Brotzmann comes close but this is much more composed than Brotzmann. It is as visceral as Brotzmann but to my ears it is much clearer in intent.

Again, I love the album. Buy it. Set aside 45 minutes. Turn you stereo up and enjoy the ride.

Its been a little while since Ive reviewed anything, but I couldnt pass up reviewing this monster of an album. If you
like any kind of freestyle jazz, avant-garde music, or experimental/ chaotic music, then you owe it to yourself to
check this out.

Little Women are a Brooklyn quartet, comprised of two saxophones, one electric guitar, and a drum kit. You can tell that
the saxes are the focal point of the album, because they are the loudest instruments in the mix and can sometimes (unfortunately)
drown out the guitars. But man are they beautiful. Played at these very odd intervals, they are very obnoxious, loud, dissonant,
ugly; I love it.

Howeever, dont think the guitarist and drummer arent woth mentioning. They are masters of their instruments. The guitars
are jagged, angular, sharp; they just sound like a soild wall of white noise. If Merzbow played with a guitarist, it
would be this guy. And that drummer, wow! A RELENTLESS, driving tsunami of snares and cymbals, he sound as if hes channeling
Zach Hill through his limbs. And they also get their time to shine, with a 2 - 3 minute section in part III with no brass.
Actually if you took out the saxes completely, it would sound like Mick Barr and Zach Hill's album Shred Earthship.

If anything Ive said in this review sounds up your alley, please give their album a listen. True innovators and pioneers in their
genre, Little Women need to be heard

...My only complaint though would be part VII.. It is a total waste of time, I dont even know whats going on in the track.
They could have ended this behemoth with some kind of totally new note yet played, or an epic flurry to finish it out, but
sadly no.

Best track - part I

This is not like many of later years "free jazz" that is more like diet version of this form of music from the 60's and 70's. They are this century Bloodcount. The interplay is great and the music is very original. This is indeed a loud music but for a reason. If you know what you are looking (and not a casual listener) then this one if for you to worm up the apartment for the upcoming winter..

then this is an incredibly rewarding purchase. I'm very very happy I bought this record. Throat I is a bit off-putting but don't be scared. Behind the facade of the suite's 1st Movement, there is a beautiful piece waiting to be listened to. Take the leap. You won't regret it!
