It took author, Eddie David Santiago a couple of decades before he truly embraced this understanding of a faithful God that loves him unconditionally. In his book, Through the Valley Love Endures, Eddie relives his personal story of physical, emotional and racial abuse through his childhood and young adult years. With honesty and transparency, he shares how those events and others caused him to cry out to God in anger and despair, even to the point of demanding vengeance.
Fortunately, Eddie's story did not end there. His dark season of adversity led him to a place of brokenness and surrender. Through this process he realized that much of the chaos of his life was the result of never completely surrendering his circumstances to God. As a result, Eddie experienced a healing and hope that now allows him to help others as they too walk through seasons of darkness.
I met Eddie Santiago at a worship conference this past summer. In our subsequent communications, I have come to understand that Eddie's humble desire for his book is to serve as a reminder to others that God's enduring love can also lead them through the valleys. Eddie's educational background and calling as a counselor in the mental health/substance abuse field has given him daily opportunities to encourage others with that truth. He also founded the organization L.E.A.D. (Love Endures And Delivers) to offer interactive group training events, seminars, speaking opportunities and crisis counseling sessions for all ages.
Through the Valley Love Endures reminds us to hold fast...the God who calls us will also sustain us; Hold fast...in full assurance that God knows what you are going through and where you are; Hold fast...since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, His body" (Heb. 10:19-20); Hold fast...our life and the lives of others depends on it.
I will admit that the small skeptic in me occasionally found some of Eddie's recollections of conversations to sound almost too good to be true. But, I took that as calling from his memory of what was said by both himself and other parties. Some of the supernatural encounters he presents may seem a bit far fetched for those whose minds are closed off to believing in things unseen.
The bottom line is that the message of this book is all about embracing God's love for us and sharing it with the world. As simple as that sounds, it is a powerful message and something that many of us would most likely admit we fall quite short of achieving.
Many thanks to Eddie for taking that leap of faith and answering God's call to put his own experience and thoughts into words that can be shared with others seeking healing and peace in their lives. May more of us become reflections of God's love in the world, bringing light that will banish the darkness.
I was so moved by this book. I could relate to so much of what he went through. Children can be really mean to someone just because they are different. Then you pray and wonder if He's listening, after all He's God, doesn't he have bigger problems to deal with? Eddie may have hated God at some point, but God always had his angels watching over him. This book shows how Eddie grew spiritually and continues to grow, reaching out to others. Thank you, Mr. Santiago, for sharing your story with me. I hope many are blessed by it and their faith renewed.
