In this work, Mathias has created an amazingly fun fantasy world. Action, adventure, romance, politics, love, hate. He weaves it all together quite well with a breakneck pace that will keep you flipping pages to see what happens next. The fights are intense and well written, some of the secondary characters are a bit flat but it would be hard to really expand upon them without slowing down which would take away from the narrative and style Mathias went for.
Quite enjoyed it and would happily suggest it to any fantasy fans out there!
The writing isn't top-notch. Characters can be rather flat. The story moves at a fast pace, which keeps things from getting boring, but at the same time the story wasn't that surprising to me. The world itself is filled with a fair amount of fantasy tropes, but it's well-described and expanded upon that it feels like a functioning world. It's a good bit of mindless fun, but nothing that will really stick with you after you read it. In addition, the proofreading and formatting were nicely done.
Another complaint is that maybe three-fourths of this book is actually the book. The rest is a long preview for the next installment. I would have preferred that this novel get fleshed out a bit more.
Still, despite it's faults, this story makes me a bit nostalgic for the gritty fantasy novels I read when I was younger. While I wouldn't recommend it for any age group lower than like 15 or 16 due to content, I think people who are older and/or more well read will have less of a good time with it.
The characters have some depth, but not so much to over shadow the rest of the story. I will say that like many other fantasy novels this one making up creatures and giving them strange names really did add a Tolkien feel to it.
Over all I enjoyed the story and am in the process of reading the second book in ther series.
I loved the story line and the build up. I feel it didn't draw out to long and kept the pace moving well. I do feel like a few characters could probably have been built a bit better or their dialogue a little better. Other than that I think this book is an awesome read if you like to go to another world for a few hours. I will have to check out other books by M.R. Mathis.
It’s a very intriguing story and captivated my attention throughout the book. I didn’t like the abrupt ending of the book. The Kindle version ends at 78% with a preview of book 2.
I will definitely be reading more in this series as I’ve already started on book 2.
