Build quality is impeccable. It performs well beyond my wildest expectations.
This is the perfect light for search and rescue ops where you want to see what's out in the distance.
NOTE: This is NOT a light to use inside your house.
Does this puppy throw! The unit's pamphlet says 1,043 meters (sic) (!), but in my own informal and very accurate testing, I have concluded that it illuminates near-earth objects and passing planets. The large and deep, beautifully crafted reflector throws it's beam like a 5' wide laser - 300' out at the 438 lumen setting and it looks like an arc-light illuminating a Broadway stage. The beam is so tight your target is illuminated as if YOU are out there right next to it with a 438 lumen light... I find the 438 lumen setting is more than enough (7.6 hours) as most of the actual output from this wonderfully deep and wide reflector is sent right to the target.
The ability to control the brightness in 6 steps is VERY welcome and the .4 lumen lowest setting (a nice reading lamp) is surprisingly nice to have whenever you don't want to set fire to a building interior or national forest, but still get around in the dark. You can trail-walk for 40 days at this level before the next charge. Step it up to the other levels (.4,11,178,438,738,1,150) and the night world beyond your state is no longer a mystery. If you turn the control ring (I really like this method of selection) for more lumens, it becomes a ridiculously bright spotlight that may seriously blind your own night vision if reflected off foreground objects or adjacent to your target. The 11 lumen setting (13 days) is also great for trail walking and general camp illumination. At 1,150 lumens you can, as already mentioned, look for new planets. The only problem with that activity would be the speed limit of light and the unit may run out of battery power before you can see the surface of Uranus.
This unit is not power limited - It's limited only by the acuity of your own night vision. You probably can't see out to the limits of it's beam without a bi or monocular and that is so far away it becomes almost pointless...
I very highly recommend this light.
The second unit had two problems. First, it wouldn't power off. The LED would flicker slightly when powered off. Obviously some sort of short. Secondly, 1/4 of the CREE was completely dead so the light wasn't as bright as the other one that had the focus issue.
I'm tempted to try a third unit and will be willing to raise my rating if that one is defect free.
It's not an everyday flashlight, so don't buy it if you don't have the need for a narrow long throw beam, but as a spotlight it can't be beat.
PS: Try it on a misty night and watch the beam go into orbit.
Cons- batteries and charger aren't so great. All of the batteries read "error" when I put them in the charger. I would pay a little extra for some high quality batteries
