The charger is small (3-1/4 x 1-3/8 x 1 inches), light (37g - 1.3 oz), fully automatic, fully protected, and idiot-proof. You plug it into a USB power source, put in a battery and the red light comes on indicating charging. When the green light illuminates, charging is completed. If you put a charged lithium battery into the charger and don't plug in a power source, you'll notice a blue glow around its full-size USB port. The charger is now a 1A USB power supply. Note that this only works with lithium batteries. The reason is protection - a lithium rechargeable can be damaged if discharged below 3V. Therefore the power supply circuit turns off when the battery's voltage is less than 3V. That means a 1.2V NiMH cell falls below the cutoff voltage even when fully charged.
Also note that you want to use a high-capacity USB port with this charger. The standard USB port only provides 500mA, and while it works, the battery will charge at less than half the speed it's capable of. The USB port should be one of the newer 1.3A high-capacity variety for the fastest charging. If you have a tablet or one of the "phablet" phones you can use it's charger - most of them are of this type.
In addition to a USB-A to micro-USB cable, the charger comes with a ballistic nylon case, which is overkill in my opinion. I don't recommend using it while you charge - it has the potential to overheat your battery, which will reduce the charging rate as the thermal protection kicks in.
In summary, if you need a small, light, fool-proof way to charge one battery while hiking, you will REALLY like this charger. If you do not
hike, you may still like this charger as a portable unit for the car or work site, since it will work with your existing phone charger. If you only charge batteries at home, or need to charge several batteries at once, another charger will be a better fit for your usage.

Too bad these are sold in the same add as I must rate together.
My review for the open frame version: Will charge 3.6/7 Li-ion batteries as large as 26mm and will charge NiMH cells as well. Will work as a USB power source with both Li-ion and LiFEPo4 cells (but won't charge the latter). USB output says 1A rating and it will not provide much more despite having the data pins connected to one another identifying itself as a DCP (dedicated charging port) under the BC1.2 spec. DCP devices are allowed to pull 1.5A. Attempting to pull 1.5A USB resulted in a sag to email@example.comA with the included NCA battery. Using a high drain NMC battery the port could provide 1.42A at just over 4V and cycled on and off rapidly Also despite identifying itself as a DCP, I could not get any phone to pull more than 500mA from it probably due to voltage sag.
Update: Performance has degraded. When my Samsung S7 tries to pull 1.3A, the power drops to about 3V and the output light flashes. A small popping sound can be heard in time with the light. Junk--I'm returning. I wish I was not forced to rate the U1 and C2 because the C2 is better. If only it did not identify itself as a high power source devices would only 500mA and all would be good (just another product with an exaggerated rating), but as is it will not work correctly.
My review for the compact closed version (C2): This version is a little different. It seems to be able to output a lot more current. It identified itself as a proprietary Apple charger (2.8v on D+, 2.0v on D-) so many phones won't know to pull more than 500mA from it. I'm writing this review without my adjustable USB calibration load handy but I was able to get one device to pull 1.75A with the included battery and almost 2A high output battery. Voltage had sagged to 4.95v in each case so I think the pulling device was throttling. Technically the USB spec allows you to sag to 4.75v so the rated 3A output may be honest even if not very usable. On the charging side I could not get it to take more than an AMP from either a proper DCP port or Apple port. I suspect the 2.4A rating is nonsense. Don't expect to be able to do any better than overnight charging (with sleeping in). Update: Using a PowerPow FashCharge+ to override the Apple identification I was able to get 1.3-1.5A charging on my phone.
The different colors while discharging and charging to show voltage/charge state are nice is as is it turning itself off when charging is full. This using with a couple spare batteries is almost ideal for airport/airplane use and is more discrete than the open frame version. For phone charging the "feature" that it turns itself off when there is no load (phone full) is actually a real feature.
The C2 was a little overpriced at $28 for is now a good buy at $16. I ordered a second unit to charge both phone and tablet or eReader when traveling. I would recommend the C2. Wish I could say the same for the U1.
