I ended up skimming quite a bit of the book because the sex scenes became gratuitous, I would have liked to see more plot development, or…something. It felt like the script for a cheesy porn movie rather than a story you could get invested in. Unfortunately the author’s writing style didn’t work for me either. The sentences were simple and clipped, making the story feel overly punctuated, both literally and figuratively.
I think this is a case of, “it’s not you, it’s me”. Many will love this book, it is definitely sexy, it just wasn’t for me.
I think I skimmed one section, but what I found interesting was how the aspects of the male character that were unappealing outside the bedroom became appealing when wielded in the bedroom—at least for the female character. Their sexual relationship is based on the idea that women, or this woman anyway, likes to be dominated. It’s a common theme in romances, and harks back to primitive times when the females of the species liked a man who could, above all, be strong and care for her and any offspring. The thing that this author did well was to marry the dominating alpha male aspects of the character with tenderness and concern. The nice thing about such characters is that when they’ve found their woman, they know she’s the one and don’t hold back from letting her know. Women like that.
What made me pick up this book was that several reviewers said how well it was written, that it was more than your normal romance. I believe someone even used the word literary romance, and I think it’s a good term for this book. Why? Because these characters have issues, particularly the woman. Her brother an Afghanistan veteran committed suicide, an event which left scars on her and her best friend. The male character is also a veteran and a top-of-the-line male prostitute. It makes for an interesting character.
At first I didn’t like the male character at all. He comes across as an arrogant jerk. At the end he is less arrogant and you realise that he is actually a very caring fellow, not such a jerk as he first appears. The way he helps the woman to sort out her issues is unexpected and gives the story a depth it wouldn’t otherwise have. So this is more than a story about two people getting it off together—though that is a big part of it—it’s also about how people can heal each other, and how the right person can be the impetus for major changes in our life.
Expert writing, impeccable editing, a well-constructed, enjoyable story with depth of characterisation and meaning means that this book warrants 5 stars.
Olivia is heartbroken after her brother commits suicide due to complications from his PTSD after leaving his last tour of duty with the Marines. She feels responsible for his death since she wasn't there for him so now she has thrown herself into the charity she is trying to start. She wants to train service dogs for people with PTSD so she throws an art auction to raise the money she needs for her start up. She's totally focused on her charity and not expecting to meet anyone until she lays eyes on Alex.
Alex is an ex Marine himself but dealt with his PTSD by becoming a male escort. He feels totally in control having women pay him for his skills in bed and loves having no attachments. He has no plans of changing this until he sees Olivia from across the room at her fundraiser.
These two have an explosive meeting in that it is almost hate at first sight but they can't deny the sexual chemistry between them. Thinking it will be a one time thing they give in but soon realize they can't get enough of each other. The more time they spend together the more they realize this could be something real.
Can Olivia look past what Alex was doing for a living before he met her? Will Alex be able to give up what he does for someone he just met? Find out in the this enemies to lovers romance!
I read this book in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. I give this book 5 stars!

He’s rude, abnoxious, arrogant, an escort, and he doesn’t do relationships of any kind. It took about 30 seconds of reading for me to absolutely adore him. The way he is so sure of himself while he does his job is very attractive. Then when he spots Olivia and makes a beeline for her thinking it will be purely for one moment then quickly falling like Alice down the rabbit hole was beautiful showing that even the roughest and toughest of men have hearts that can be cracked.
Olivia is trying to launch a new charity to help veterans with PTSD, having lost her brother to PTSD she wants to do everything she can to save other families the heartbreak she experiences. She is a gentle soul with a heart of gold. She’s spent most of her adult life in love with the same man, but he’s never looked twice at her. Alex infuriates her but he wakes up parts of her body she’s never realised could be woken up, she feels things she’s never felt before.
This is a highly charged sexual novel, Sybil Bartel writes in a beautiful way that is enticing and riveting all at once. I can’t wait to get my hooks into Grind and see what is in store next.
Alex and Olivia's story has great dialogue, depth and supporting characters whom I'm dying to get to know better. I loved Alex's initial brashness - oh boy this guy is cocky - but Sybil paints a picture of a man who is so much more than his ten inches of real estate. Olivia is "sweetness" and her love of dogs, commitment to her brothers memory enable her inner strength to be explored without her character coming across as a ball breaking bitch.
This was a short read for me because I didn't want to put it down. I laughed and thoroughly enjoyed this book and I'll be checking out Talon and Neil's stories soon too.
I enjoyed the story but some things were left unclear like how Alex would maintain his lifestyle - were his investments that good?
The only issue I had was with Jesse,I think there needed to be a little more sustenance to that part of the storyline. He gave one liners then walked out and there was never any explaining or reason given. He gave her what we were led to believe were sleeping pills but again that part of the story was dropped. His friends seemed to think he was a hero but we saw another side to him. This is why I gave four stars instead of 5. I do hope Jesse gets a story of his own and a chance to redeem himself.
This is the first book I've read by Sybil Bartel and it certainly won't be the last!
