5.0 out of 5 stars Great Plug & Play Wheel for PC
By Devon Beckwith on October 17, 2016
Bought this wheel primarily for iRacing, and it works like a charm on my PC. I plugged it in, made sure the switch was on PC mode, and did not have to configure any software, it worked right out the box. The pedals are very light but work well, I will probably secure them to a piece of plywood (as other reviewers have suggested) so they don't slide around on my carpet. The wheel itself has a great feel in your hands, and the paddle-shifters have satisfyingly clicky but also somewhat loud tactile-feedback. It's also a very handsome peripheral, with Ferrari red handles and the Ferrari prancing horse emblem emblazoned in the center of the wheel. There are a lot of buttons that can be customized and re-mapped - they seem to correspond with the buttons on a PlayStation 3 controller but I use them in iRacing for menu control, replay control, and text chat. While the wheel only turns 90 degrees in any direction, it is comfortable and the sensitivity can be adjusted. The mounting bracket took me a moment to figure out, but it sits securely on my desk - and it's easy enough to detach in case you don't want to use it.

All in all, the Red Legend Edition seems to be a great starter wheel for any aspiring sim racer. For me, the price was just right at $70 - much more attractive than the $200 pricetag of the Thrustmaster TMX, though this is clearly a cheaper wheel. If you have the money for a better wheel I would recommend doing that - but the Red Legend wheel is perfect in it's own regard - an entry-level, Ferrari-branded Thrustmaster racing wheel.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Best Racing Wheel For The Price
By Art-of-Zen Digital on August 8, 2019
The Best Racing Wheel For The Price

In this price point or lower, you may find racing wheels that have force feedback, however they’ll be from brands that aren’t common for the average buyer. They’ll also have smaller steering wheels than this one, and thier websites most likely won’t have current Windows 10 drivers.

If you use the Red Legend Steering Wheel on Windows 10, the first thing you should do is go to the Thrustmaster website, and download the appropriate Windows 10 drivers. Then to click the switch on the Wheel to PC mode. The online manual from the Thrustmaster website will help you adjust the wheel sensitivity for either hard or soft steering. These settings help quite a lot depending on the game. I leave the wheel on it’s default settings. If you change the wheel sensitivity, you have to do it each time you turn off your PC and start again. If you leave your wheel plugged in and only leave it on standby, then it’ll stay in whatever mode you left it in. This also applies to the custom brake and gas pedal settings as well.

Now onto the product itself. The wheel may look like a toy, but the plastic they choose mimics the look and feel of leather relatively well. The plastic itself is a decent quality for the price and the rubber wheel grip feels excellent overall. The wheel isn’t too light, nor is it too heavy. Its weight is right in the middle, because at first glance, it looks like it should be heavier than it actually is. The wheel steering mechanism that returns the wheel to its default position, and offers steering resistance, is based on a bungee cord located separately on both the left, and the right turning positions. If you’re gentle with it, it should last a long time. I know people who’ve had this model for several years, and people who’ve had it break within two months. Now with that being said, the pedals feel very good as well. They’re made of a light, but sturdy plastic. If you’re not happy with the pedal setup, you can unscrew either one of the pedals, and you’ll find a long and short screw on each one. If you rotate the pedal and flip the screw orientation the way it’s shown in the online instruction manual, you’ll get different results for the pedal angle that may be better for you. The pedal base has several rubber feet on the bottom. On carpeted or smooth tiled surfaces, it slides very easily. On more solid wood surfaces, it grips into place surprisingly well. The pedals offer the right amount of resistance for games like Project Cars 1 and 2, where having the correct drivers installed allows for this exact controller to be detected properly. Doing the 3 step calibration for the wheel and pedals in the game’s options menu made the gameplay experience perfect for me.

Now onto gameplay. The wheel doesn’t have force feedback, and it uses a bungee cord instead of a resistance motor like the more expensive racing wheels do. This is to be expected, so it’s not a knock against this wheel at all. To accommodate for the lack of rumble, I put my surround sound system’s bass on high, and increased the car sounds in each game, as well as the ambient sounds, then lowered the music and voices slightly. This caused a light rumble in the standing tray table I use to lock the steering wheel onto. It’s not perfect, but it worked well for me. In each game you play, you have to change the controls to the racing wheel. You’ll see it as an option if you installed the drivers properly.

In the older game, Dirt 3 for PC, the presets for this wheel were flawless. Now in the newer Dirt Rally 2.0, you need to change the controller preference settings to enable the wheel, as with other titles. Unlike most recent titles though, you’ll actually have to set up each button and steering axis accordingly. For console emulators, you’ll have to change the input settings from X-Input, which is the setup for Xbox controllers, to D-Input, or direct input. Once you do that, you’ll have to increase the sensitivity of the Left Trigger and Right Trigger buttons because the defaults don’t have enough range for the beak and gas pedals on the Red Legend Racing Wheel foot pedals. You’ll have to do the same thing for the Left analog stick, which acts as your steering wheel, otherwise your in game turning radius will be off.

This is basically everything as far as using the Red Legend Steering Wheel goes. I docked a point becuse this Wheel was updated for the Xbox one, with chrome shifting paddles and a slightly nicer visual presentation. The updated Xbox One only model still lacks force feedback and uses the same bungee cord resistance mechanism though. This product has been out for some time in the lower price point category. Having a slightly more expensive option with enhanced visual appeal and materials for a slightly higher price would be nice in the lower tier racing wheel PC market since the PS3 had effectively reached the end of its life cycle a long time ago. Having PS3 support is a nice plus, but this wheel doesn’t work on PS4 it X-Box One, so an updated PC version that mimics the Xbox One versions aesthetics would be ideal.
