I ordered this in early mid-April, to use with the X-Box One I also ordered. I like the Forza Motorsport "game" from Microsoft, and hardly ever use the X-Box for any other games. I have had the X-Box 360 with Forza 3 and 4 since 2010, and thoroughly enjoyed playing them with the Microsoft Force Feedback Wheel. As Microsoft isn't making a wheel (yes, they show the Mad Catz on their website, but it isn't a Microsoft wheel), I read the reviews of the Thrustmaster TX and bought it. I did read that some of the users had problems, but like some of them, I thought that my careful use would ensure that I wouldn't be among them.
The wheel arrived, and after following the manufacturer's instructions about updating first, I installed it. It worked GREAT! The use of this wheel with the physics of the X-Box One Forza 5 game made a very realistic experience. Simulation jumped from an "arcade-y" imitation to a sense of driving real road cars.
I did notice that the wheel required me to reset a lot, having to remove the USB plug and re-insert as the FF would disappear. Also, sometimes the fan noise of the motor cooling would continue indefinitely after shutting down the X-Box, and would only stop if I removed the USB plug. Also, I would periodically notice that distinctive "motor-smell" of electric motor malfunction, though I never saw any "smoke".
I used the wheel for approx 10-12 hours, intermittently, of game-play over a three-week period, taking care to allow the unit to cool down if I'd used it for an hour or more.
Then, 6 days ago, the wheel suddenly shut-down in the middle of a race...as if the power was removed. I carefully checked everything, and when it would not light up again, I allowed it to cool for several hours to see if that helped. Nothing. After two days of trying, I contacted Thrustmaster by email, and they responded rather quickly. They had a list of suggestions to try, and I tried them all. Still no power. But, there was that smell I noted before, and this time it didn't seem to go away.
I contacted Amazon, and chose Replacement, and received a new wheel in 48 hours! Can't beat that!
I installed the new wheel yesterday, and it is running beautifully. I will note that I am having none of the issues that I had experienced with the original wheel by this point of game-play. I have not had to re-boot, nor have I observed fan noise and motor smell. I am very happy with the actual use of this wheel, especially compared to the old Windows Microsoft Force Feedback Wheel and the X-Box 360 FF Wheel. And all of them are miles ahead of the Mad Catz wheel I also have and discarded with the X-Box 360.
An update: after a week or intermittent use, this new wheel is performing flawlessly. I haven't had to reboot while using it, and the fan only kicks on once-in-a-while, and for brief periods. I will note that, apparently, you should unplug the wheel's USB from the X-Box, even when it is off. I found the wheel's fan on this morning, though the X-Box One had been turned off hours ago. I could find no advice for this from Thrustmaster.
Second week update: wheel still performing very well. My only complaint would be that it will not retain the wheel-turn setting when the USB plug is removed and re-inserted. By this I mean that I like to use the wheel with a 270-degree setting, rather than the 900-degree setting the wheel resets to as "default". When I plug the USB into my computer to use the Thrustmaster Control Panel, it says the wheel is currently set to 270-degrees. However, when I re-plug into the X-Box, I always have to go to the Controller Settings tab, which is somewhat obscure, and change the settings in the Forza game to 270; once done, all works well. Compared to the issues I had with the original wheel, I can live with this glitch.
I was just like you. Read the reviews about the quality issues and thought "it won't happen to me" and ordered it. Wheel broke in under two hours. Wheel recognizes the right paddle shifter as being permanently pulled, even though it is physically fine. Thrustmaster support is awful. Initially sent an email. No response after three days. So I called. They require you to take a video of your problem and send it to them to process any repair or replacement. I was then informed that they don't carry parts for that model. They would try to find a new wheel. This tells me this model will become unsupported very soon. I ended up processing a refund to avoid thrustmaster's ridiculous procedures. What a waste. A $300 dollar wheel should have much better quality, and a much better company backing it.
Update: after having this wheel about 7 months, I went to plug it in one day, where it had worked perfectly the previous day, and it wouldn't work. It ran the calibration, then shut down. I tried all the steps I found to get it to recognize, nothing. Can't update firmware because of same issue. It's now an expensive brick.
Works great, feels great. It could be 5 star, if it weren't for 2 things:
1. An input for the Xbox headset to facilitate easier chat during multiplayer. As is, you have to connect it to a separate controller, which you need to keep nearby. And if you're not using it constantly, you need that controller to be plugged in to stay on. A simple, cheap input on the base would cure this.
2. Some kind of force feedback in the pedal unit. It wouldn't need much, just a couple little vibration units. The base is plenty big enough to accommodate them. You feel the feedback in the "pedals" when using the controller, but none with the full wheel & pedal. It would add a lot.
