And mind you, I have not used this regularly, or put an abusive amount of hours on it. I only use it to play Elite Dangerous, and I'm pretty casual.
The RZ-Axis (twisting motion for the yaw in flight), started erratically moving on its own. To make a long story short, Thrustmaster technical support led me along a long list of things to try to narrow down the issue and rule out software or my own PC. In the end, it was in fact a failure of the potentiometer inside the device. Thrustmaster seemed to be willing to send me a replacement, until they knew I had owned it for more than one year, at which point they said they would do nothing for me.
Less than 2 years of use for what was a $70 controller when I bought it seems absurd. And if Thrustmaster is only supporting their product for 1 year that ought to tell you something.
Once I started googling "T16000 RZ axis failure" I was shocked with the sheer volume of people having this exact issue. So many people, and with such poor support from Thrustmaster, that there are YouTube walkthroughs to de-solder, clean, and replace the RZ potentiometer, multiple Reddit, Frontier (Elite Dangerous) forum posts, and general Q/A about the exact issue I'm having. It isn't an isolated failure. And TM isn't helping anyone.
I'd honestly recommend Logtiech devices at this price point. Thrustmaster missed the mark really hard here, and their lack of support left me feeling really regretful that I bought their product.
UPDATE:
It is now loudly creaking when I pitch up and down. Reduced rating to one star - find a better joystick.
Now as to how we got here, Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous and DCS have revived the market for these HOTAS setups. For the longest time there weren’t any new HOTAS setups on the market because there were no games to warrant the investment by the companies that make them. This has all changed and this is the first HOTAS setup developed from the ground up for the games people want them for. The joystick is a redesign of the T.16000 that has been available but that didn’t need changing at all, while the throttle is all new and thoroughly thought out. The built quality is excellent and the size is appropriate so it can fit on your desk along with your mouse and keyboard. The weight distribution is spot on so it stays put while you’re playing and everything is pinpoint accurate. I used a X52 an X52 Pro and own a X55, they are ALL overpriced right now. If you were looking at them a year ago, they were all AT LEAST $50 cheaper than what they are now and they were overpriced THEN for the products you get. Saitek just jacked up the prices because people were starting to buy them. I put CH products in this category as well after seeing a teardown of their HOTAS; it’s higher quality than Saitek but still overpriced. With Thrustmaster you’re getting what you pay for. Bottom line, under $400 there is no competition for the quality, accuracy and functionally you get with this HOTAS.
I picked this HOTAS up because I was tired of the issues I'd had with my X55 and X56. Logitech's support was excellent but I would rather have fewer buttons and fewer issues than the risk of issues I'd been dealing with persisting. My plan is to use the Thrustmaster one while saving up for one of the almost absurdly expensive options but since that's probably more than a year away at best, this one will do quite nicely. I plan to also pick up the rudder pedals eventually since they're the only ones that will fit in my Obutto oZone. (I could have spent the extra on the other Obutto model but it seemed a little silly for the added features.)
The only thing I don't like about this product is there seems to be no easy way to control the light on the stick. I'd rather it be either on or off instead of coming on whenever I move the stick. That's a pretty minor thing, though, and definitely not worth reducing my rating of it. For the price point, it's perfectly suitable and a great value.
Top reviews from other countries
Pros :
-The flight stick itself is nicely shaped and feels good in the hand
-The base is solid and wont budge as the stick moves around
-The default tension on the springs feels great and you probably wont need to adjust it (but you can)
-Stick comes with parts to change it from a right hand stick to a left hand stick.
-Throttle has plenty of buttons and PoV hats to assign things to
-Throttle has rudder controls which are very handy
-Whole set feels reasonably well made
Cons :
-My main complaint about the stick is the orange light at the base, it's incredibly distracting and very bright with no way to turn it off or dim it (without opening the joystick and cutting a wire). Make sure you get some electrical tape and dark card to cover it.
-Stick could really use a thumb and little finger button
-Buttons on the stick give very little tactile feedback
-Buttons on the base of the stick feel clumsy and poorly placed
My biggest issue is with the throttle, 2 days in and it will not throttle smoothly. Moving it forward or back results in it stuttering and sticking for an overall really poor experience. I cant help but feel if Thrustmaster spent a little more money developing and testing, they would have made a very nice flight stick.
If you need a stick & throttle and you're on a budget, this might be for you. But if you can afford a little extra, you may want to check out what other companies are offering.
Edit : Dropping from 3 to 2 stars. After only about 10-15 hours of light use, the rudder pedals on the throttle are constantly seen in games as jerking violently to the right, making their use impossible. I did a little research on what I might be able to do to fix this and it seems to be a common problem requiring RMA or knowledge of electronics to fix.
My issue is with the throttle operation. Again the buttons are well paced, easy to get at (I have small hands but larger hands may struggle a bit) but.... and its a massive but.... the throttle slider is totally abysmal. The first 3 days it slid forwards and backwards really nicely and I said to myself "what are those folk who grumble about it being sticky on about" then I found out. Its become jerky and sticky and really not nice to use other than for the buttons. I have tried a little Vaseline on the runners and it worked for a day then back to stickiness. I have cleaned the runners and tried a light oil... same thing. So, I am looking for a replacement model for my throttle, I dont believe sending it back for another will make any difference because its a design fault . The Joystick as I said, is a delight . Shame really because it looks really well on my desk.
1. the throttle doesn't have a center stop, so in Elite, for instance, to reverse thrust you have to hit a button, makes it a pain when trying to land/dock. Given this was designed specifically for Elite dangerous, I had expected something better, the throttle setup on the Hotas X is better,
2. Build quality (again) after a few weeks of play, the bottom rest on the stick came loose and rotates
3. Build Quality - the yaw axis drifts on its own. I had this issue with a hotas x also. Whilst it was fine in the beginning, this started after a couple of weeks, and has steadily become worse.
For the price, I wouldn't expect this kind of quality issues.
On the otherhand, playing DCS/ED using ThrustMaster in VR is another story. The stick is so sensitive allowing very fine movements/adjustments and there are plenty of buttons/HATS to use/assign for both games.
