From the Manufacturer
The T500 RS Racing Wheel for PS3 from Thrustmaster, maker of innovative PC and console accessories, delivers the most realistic, powerful driving experience, with no compromises. The T500 RS wheel and pedal set is specially designed for Gran Turismo 5, and other driving simulators for the PS3. PC drivers are now available through the Thrustmaster website, making it fully compatible with all PC racing titles.
The T500 RS is a real driving simulator, combining power and precision. Thrustmaster has drawn from more than 20 years of expertise in racing wheels, with a single goal: to develop a wheel and pedal set that allows users to go as far as possible in the Gran Turismo 5 experience. The designers have taken into account the expectations of the most demanding gamers, while also adhering to the technical choices of the developers of this new opus in the benchmark car racing series.
An Infinite Number of Driving Styles
Completely optimized for GT5, the T500 RS meets the demand for absolute realism. The first thing you'll will notice when setting it up is its weight: 10lbs for the wheel, and 16lbs for the pedal set. Another instantly visible feature is the omnipresent use of metal--for the gearshift levers, the wheel's central spokes section (12" in diameter) and the pedal set. This has required a mechanical design with no compromises.
Realistic Wheel Handling
Ergonomics were at the heart of the wheel's development, with an eye on optimizing game play, performance and driving sensations. The sequential gearlevers mounted on the base feature large 6.7" levers that are constantly accessible without letting go of the wheel. The wheel itself offers a remarkable 1080° rotation. These 3 full turns are also adjustable, thanks to a motorized stop, allowing the gamer choose the maximum degree of rotation according to the type of racing circuit and the car being driven.
Metal Pedals with Two Driving Positions
The spacing and height of the 100% metal pedal set is also fully adjustable and accommodate individual driving preferences by offering 2 positions: "floor-mounted" F1 style, or "suspended" GT style. The brake pedal has been given extra attention, with reinforced and adjustable resistance that lets users perfectly tailor their braking with near surgical precision, and which includes a removable mod. A textured foot rest, also crafted entirely of metal, completes the pedal set. Gamers will notice that having 3 pedals at their disposal not only enhances the level of realism, but it also gives them a taste of what's to come with the addition of an independent gear stick, which will also be available from Thrustmaster in the coming months.
More Power and Precision to Push the Limits of Racing
The T500 RS is a true racing simulator designed for the most die-hard racing fans. Its power is unmatched, with Force Feedback effects relayed via a 65W industrial motor, providing 150mNm at 3000 RPM. The Force Feedback mechanism is vigorous, fast-acting, and extremely responsive. While the power is potent, the integrated large dual-belt system ensures backlash-free and smooth behavior.
Fans of even the most intense racing experience know that power alone does not allow them to achieve the best performance. With this in mind, the T500 RS provides total precision which never decreases over time. The T500 RS employs the same technology developed for the world's latest benchmark flight stick, Thrustmaster's HOTAS WARTHOG. The magnetic sensor-based H.E.A.R.T HallEffect AccuRate Technology is incorporated into the wheel's steering mechanism. As a result the wheel is super-precise with 16-bit resolution and 65536 values on its steering axis.
With this wheel and pedal set, users will go farther than ever before in the thrill of the ultimate racing experience. Get ready for an extraordinary ride.
Top Customer Reviews
I hoped that this would be the last time I had to deal with this company and its employees, but I would not be so lucky. A couple of days ago a spring in the gas pedal broke. This left the pedal limp and unresponsive. I replied to their last email asking for a new spring. I waited for four days, no response from customer support. I decided to go on their website and email them from there. I then get a response from an automated service with a case number. Immediately I send them a video showing the damaged pedal, proof of purchase and my information. I get a reply two days later from a customer rep who asks me to email him the version number of my wheel. Another cockamamie question designed to delay the process. I email a reply as soon as I get home and are able to look under the wheel to check the version number. Here I ask the rep if it is possible to receive an extra spring and a plastic gear in case this happens again to another of the pedals. To which I promptly get a negative response. It's incredible that I get such a fast response refusing to send me a couple of parts which together are probably worth less than a dollar. But somehow I am not surprised. I also get an email from a different customer rep asking me for my address and proof of purchase. I email them, for the third time, a copy of my amazon invoice. Two weeks later and still no spring.
If you want to spend $600 dollars on a wheel which will eventually malfunction, look no further. Having been given permission by thrustmaster to disassemble the wheel I can tell you that the parts used to manufacture such a product will fail. It is only a matter of time. The motor is of good quality and so are the sensors, but mechanically moving parts are of poor quality. The steering column is made of plastic, that when updated with the F1 rim shredded a bit. The hex screws are made of very poor quality metal and are prone to rounding. The case housing the internal components of the wheel is overly large and is prone to overheating due to a proper lack of ventilation. The score of 1 star regarding how much fun is this wheel, is due to the employees of thrustmaster who have created a corporate climate of blaming the end customer for their company's shoddy workmanship. They have become very adept at evading the responsibility of the warranty claims they make when selling their overpriced equipment. If you want to be treated disrespectfully, with disdain and even contempt for purchasing an overpriced toy which will only give you headaches; please do what I did and buy Thrustmaster.
I purchased this a while back and really didn't use it. Tried it years later, and downloaded and tried to install the latest drivers. Followed instructions to the letter, and, as a result, the Wheel no longer works. Called customer support (which is in France); the technical support person, was CLEARLY tired (it was 12:30 am in France) and didn't seem terribly interested in helping me fix the issue; he just kept saying that there was nothing they could do because the device was out of warranty. He did, however, acknowledge that the driver update most like ruined my PCB and that this was a KNOWN ISSUE if you didn't not update the device in sequence. I note that this is NOT indicated in the update instructions and, oh by the way, you can't download the old drivers from their website. Again, the response was that it item is out of warranty and so too bad so sad. This problem has nothing to do with the warranty; it's the result of their own drivers!
I now need to purchase a new PCB board from Thrustmaster at a cost of approximately$60-70 dollars (actual cost is in euros, and no mention was made re: shipping, which I'm guessing they're not going to pay for either).
Totally unacceptable. If you want to spend $600 on a device that might be ruined as a result of a driver update, go for it. For me, this is the last Thrustmaster device I'll buy.
You can feel all the bumps on the racecourse, the 'washboard' feel of the rumble strips and the hard wall !
Set-up was easy. It is attached to my computer desktop using the supplied clamp. Loosened up once and took some repositioning and no problems since. Impressive solid piece of hardware.
PC software was downloaded from their site.
4 Stars only because of the clamp. When you start your computer make sure not to have hands on wheel as it rotates left and right on its own for a few seconds as part of its startup procedure.
The pedals are very good quality, heavy construction. Accelerator, brake ( more resistance than accelerator but that's good as I use both feet to race and can rest my left foot on the brake somewhat without depressing it) and clutch; I use the paddle shifters for now so no clutch needed but the option is there for available gear shift preferred.
Not cheap but you get what you pay for and its worth it to me.
