It succeeds in this by blending a convenient, feature-rich design, with value and space. The box's dominant design feature is its diamond-textured AeroSkin shell, constructed from durable five-layer ABS plastic. The lid holds up to the toughest weather conditions, and thanks to its aerodynamic shape, which pushes air away from the box encouraging smoother air flow, it can be left on year-round without a significant increase in noise. The reduction in drag through the aerodynamic design may also negate any impact to vehicle fuel efficiency.

Thule cargo box Quick-Grip mounting hardware

Simple Quick-Grip Mounting Hardware

Thule Force cargo boxes attach easily to roof racks via Quick-Grip knob hardware along raised grooves in the floor of the box. The tool-free mounting capability of Quick-Grip hardware, and the range of the box's floor grooves make installation of the box a snap, literally installing in less than 5 minutes in many applications.

Thule cargo box dual-side opening functionality

The Convenience of Dual-Side Opening

The lid also offers the convenience of dual-side access. This means you can get to your gear whether you are on the driver, or the passenger side of the vehicle. And when the lid is open, its built-in lifter elements at the front and rear of the box hold the box open providing hands-free access to gear.

When you are done with your box, simply pull the lid closed, and built-in Thule SecureLock technology ensures that all edges of the lid are completely closed, and included locking functionality at the drivers side of the box ensure that it stays that way. Oversized SecureLock elements are also easy to grasp, even with gloves on, making the box simple to use in winter conditions.

I am one of those people who do not write reviews but after purchasing this piece of equipment, I felt a review was warranted. I was originally undecided on purchasing the XXL or the XL for my 2014 Toyota Highlander. After doing some research, I figured that the XXL would be too big and extend too far over my front windshield and my rear antennae. So I purchased the XL for a christmas holiday road trip from the east coast to the midwest and mid south. The Force was absolutely amazing. It arrived exactly as stated and the people It held a lot of gear in it to the point where I overloaded it and it was quite difficult to shut the lid and it wouldn't lock unless I had a another person helping me to push the lid down. Once I got it down, it locked with no problem. Apparently the carrier has some weight limit to it but I definitely went over whatever limit there is suppose to be. Not that I condone doing so with this review but I had no choice and when I did go over it, I had no issues. So even after overstuffing it, the carrier handled brilliantly through all sorts of weather and issues. It rained and snowed probably 75 percent of the time and I did not have a single drop of water inside the carrier. I was traveling around 75-80 mph the entire trip and I forgot it was up there most of the time. The difference in mph was not even noticeable and not even worth mentioning in my opinion. The biggest incident that I had was while traveling I hit a red tailed hawk going about 80 mph. The hawk smashed into my windshield, completely smashing it and wedging itself up underneath the car top carrier and my roof. When we pulled over, I saw the hawk still stuck under the carrier and I shoved him out. Hawk was fine and flew away and so was the carrier! I was absolutely stunned that there was no damage to the carrier up top. I HIGHLY recommend this car top carrier to anyone who might have any reservations with purchasing this. I had zero issues and couldn't be happier with it.

Ok, guys. This is the first time I am writing a review on Amazon, and I am going to tell you a trick to prevent the front popping up during high speed driving. The reason I bought this item was to assist myself moving from Pennsylvania to Arizona, and my car, Subaru XV Crosstrek, doesn't have enough room for me carrying all my stuff. The road trip was around 2600 miles, crossing 11 states; either on highways or country roads. My box did NOT open during those days, and successfully carried my items crossing the country in both sunny days and raining days. I put my bed comforters at the front during those days, and it didn't get wet in raining days. ( I am pretty sure it was dry because my friend and I camped every night and I used that comforter as my sleeping bag.) I am really satisfied with my purchase and can't wait to put it back on my roof for next trip. Before I bought it, I knew this is a quite expensive item so I did carefully go through the reviews and was aware that it might pop up on highway driving. However, this item was my top choice to bring my stuff. (We planed for cross country road trip and would like to see some places instead of just driving. Therefore, it was better than renting a U-Haul trailer.) Ok, here is the trick I used. When I put it on, I particularly made the front level slightly lower than the bottom level. The way I did that because I assumed the air flow during driving thus can press the top tightly to secure the box. And, it worked. The speed I was driving was from 60-80 mile/hour. Nothing happened instead of so many dead bugs smashed at the front = =. Overall, I like it A LOT; plenty of room and looks great. Hopefully next time when I use it, it will still work as I expect. Finally, good luck!!!!

This was awesome for our family trip! It holds a lot of the bulky items. We pack in duffle bags, and that worked well. And when it's not on the Chrysler T&C (the factory roof rack worked great!) it hangs on the wall in the garage on a home-made Schedule 80 PVC rack.

Just drove across the country with the XL Thule on a Jetta Sportwagon. No additional road noise, don't feel like it hurt the gas mileage either. This is a great product. The mounting instructions are easy to follow and this product comes with straps to secure the load inside the cargo box as well as locks to keep your belongings safe.

Took the advice of the other reviews and only opened the box from one side at a time. Helps to have a step ladder to load objects into the cargo box.

I have a new Thule Force XXL cargo box. On our first trip with the box we noticed that while driving 70 mph or faster the front of the box opens. All three locks on each side are still locked, but the front can open as much as 3-4 inches and allow wind, bugs and rain access to the contents of the box. It did not matter if the box was full, half full, or empty. Please see attached image, as you can see the front of the box opens with very little effort. Tried to contact Thule through their website ("ask a question") and got the "Sorry there is an error with your submission" no matter what information we put in. Had high hopes, very disappointed.

Update 7/3/13

Finally got a hold of Thule and found out they had a defect in a batch of the Thule Force XXL boxes. They offered to replace the unit. They also suggested going with the "sonic" series and we ended up exchanging for an Sonic XXL. Absolutely love it. No issues, works great.
