A Blend of Design, Convenience and Style
The Thule Force Roof Box features a winning combination of value and space, while still offering key conveniences important to every user. The roof box has a large interior capacity, and utilizes utilizes AeroSkin technology that results in a durable and the aerodynamic shape. Additional features include: tool-free Quick-Grip mounting, oversized SecureLock lid technology, a dual-side lid opening, and four size choices to fit the vehicle and hauling needs of different users.
Aerodynamic Diamond-textured AeroSkin Lid
The Thule Force Roof Box product line is designed from the ground up to provide users with a dependable and durable product that can be counted on to last for the long haul.
It succeeds in this by blending a convenient, feature-rich design, with value and space. The box's dominant design feature is its diamond-textured AeroSkin shell, constructed from durable five-layer ABS plastic. The lid holds up to the toughest weather conditions, and thanks to its aerodynamic shape, which pushes air away from the box encouraging smoother air flow, it can be left on year-round without a significant increase in noise. The reduction in drag through the aerodynamic design may also negate any impact to vehicle fuel efficiency.
Simple Quick-Grip Mounting Hardware
Thule Force cargo boxes attach easily to roof racks via Quick-Grip knob hardware along raised grooves in the floor of the box. The tool-free mounting capability of Quick-Grip hardware, and the range of the box's floor grooves make installation of the box a snap, literally installing in less than 5 minutes in many applications.
The Convenience of Dual-Side Opening
The lid also offers the convenience of dual-side access. This means you can get to your gear whether you are on the driver, or the passenger side of the vehicle. And when the lid is open, its built-in lifter elements at the front and rear of the box hold the box open providing hands-free access to gear.
When you are done with your box, simply pull the lid closed, and built-in Thule SecureLock technology ensures that all edges of the lid are completely closed, and included locking functionality at the drivers side of the box ensure that it stays that way. Oversized SecureLock elements are also easy to grasp, even with gloves on, making the box simple to use in winter conditions.
A Variety of Sizes Available
The Thule Force 624 M version provides 13 cubic feet of storage space. Additional box specifications include: weight capacity - 110 lb., dimensions - 64" (l) x 34" (w) x 16" (h), weight - 35 lb. The box is also available in three additional standardized size categories designed to help consumers determine which box is right for them: Alpine (11-12 cubic feet), X-Large - XL (16-17 cubic feet), and XX-Large - XXL (21-22 cubic feet).

Thule generally has great products, but the Force cargo box line was made with a horrible design flaw: the front of these boxes don't ever seem to fit together correctly, particularly when there is external force applied. The base has a lip that the cover extends over, but even sitting on the garage floor the cover didn't entirely close. Even when I pushed it completely closed, the top and bottom would pull apart almost an inch when I let go. Because of the lip the box was still "closed", but as soon as we put it in the Thule 572 Multilift the box would deform and the front would open about an inch. I was worried what would happen on the car, so I installed it and went for a test drive. Hitting about 50 mph, the very front of the box began to open. The sides and back were still securely closed, so I reached through the sunroof to close the front, then continued onto the highway. Everyone drives 75 here, so when I reached that speed I felt massive wind resistance. My car would't even shift into 6th gear it was so bad. I reached up only to be shocked that I couldn't reach the top of the cargo box! It had become a parachute, and must have been open 4-5 inches. I instantly slowed to 40 and drove home.
I tried this several times, with the cargo box in different positions, angles, etc. Finally I gave up, vacuumed all the dead bees and other bugs out of the cargo box, washed it up and sent it back thanks to Amazon's awesome return policy (return shipping was free).
A few years ago Thule recognized their design flaw, and issued a fix: In the Force L, XL and XXL they added a metal bar to the inside front of the cover, which helps the cover keep its shape. It seems effective. You can tell if a cargo box has it because it'll have 4 rivets on the outside of the front cover instead of 2, and you'll see the bar on the inside. Thule stated to me in an email that they normally don't have problems with the Force M, so they never fixed it -- but every Medium model I found on display in a store could EASILY be pulled open in the front, whereas the larger brothers were much more secure.
Rather than trying another Force M (it seemed likely I'd get in the same situation), I stressed over buying the next model up -- the Sonic M. I stressed because I really liked the shorter length of the Force M (11" shorter) and liked its carbon-fiber-like cover. I was worried the longer Sonic would pick up too much wind jetting off the windshield, and I wasn't a fan of the shiny polished cover -- easy to dirty and scratch. However, I am very pleased with that purchase: the Sonic comes with support bars on both the top and bottom, and the cover is sturdier which makes it easier to open and close than the Force. And, it doesn't seem as long as the 73 inches in the specs, so it fits nicely on the Mazda CX-5, with plenty of clearance for the GPS antenna even with the box pushed all the way back to 1/2" from the tailgate. I did end up moving the rear crossbar forward to raise the back of the box a bit (you want the box to be as parallel to the road as possible, otherwise it becomes a surfboard in the wind).
While the Force M is generally very well-built (and is a beautiful box), the weak and thus easily-deformed front makes it unusable unless you only drive under 50 mph (or you drill through the front and put in some kind of fastener to keep it closed, like zip ties).
It's hard to see in the attached photos, but the top cover pops up about an inch when not held in place even the the car is still. When driving, it'll be fine until it catches the wind just right and then it'll pull open. This also becomes a huge safety hazard for the drivers behind you....
I managed to install it by myself, but I do recommend 2 people for the lifting part. Doesn't weigh that much, but the bulkiness makes a 1 man job more complex. I accomplished it by draping a thick blanket over the side of the car, propping it against it then lifting from the bottom. I could do it again, but I will ensure I use another set of arms instead next time :) I was just too anxious to get it installed and send my wife a pic!
We're definitely excited to use it, and I'm expecting it to perform great. If for any reason it does not, I'll be sure to follow up on this review.
It's a nice heavy duty plastic that somewhat has the appearance of a carbon fiber look. Locks turn effortlessly, but remain securely in their positions. Haven't loaded it up yet, but I have no doubt it'll handle ALL of our camping gear for our trip coming up next weekend.
Very good product. Hope the pics and review help someone out!
