Top customer reviews
Overall, the Thule Gauntlet is a solid shell.. could use some more padding on the inside.. smell isn't THAT bad for those that are complaining.. It's kind of like a new shoe or new car smell.. call me crazy but I like it a little.
In any case, I was sick of having a big laptop bag but found most MacBook sleeves were either too flimsy, or, just made for office use where you can set it down on a clean table or go impress a client, etc. Since mine travels with me from office to happy hour to the beach, I need a case that will stand up to more abuse while still protecting my Mac. It works great for that. Yes, it's a little industrial looking but it's really not that bad in person. I often have it at a bar and end up setting drinks or dinner on top of it with no issues, so it's heat resistant too. The zippers are not visible when it is zipped up because there are rubber flaps that lie over them giving it a clean look. Inside there's a strap you can choose to use to hold the laptop in better but I never actually use it; I just put the MBPr in and zip up.
My only minor complaint is that I commonly want to take the computer out and set it on top of the case to work on. This case has a metal logo tab on one side that I have to remember to put face down because I feel like it would scratch the aluminum surface of the MBPr pretty easily if I slid the computer around on top of it.
I found this case and after reading reviews, I decided to give it a shot and ordered it.
It really well made, feels sturdy and I'm confident it'll protect my laptop. It fits my Macbook Pro perfect and doesn't look bulky to carry around. I haven't intentionally dropped tested but it's fallen from my bed (2 foot drop) and survived.
I've never spilled water on it to test the waterproofness and for those writing the zippers are a "pain in the ass to zip", must have stupid hands. I've never had a problem with the zippers and considering how snug they close I would not be surprised that this case was totally waterproof or at least resistant.
The inside has a strap to hold your Macbook Pro down and its soft so nothing will scratch the delicate surface. I especially like that I can use the laptop without taking it out of the case, the side straps provide enough resistance and support that the case remains on the Macbook Pro screen without falling back off it.
Would I buy it again? Don't think I would ever have to.
Would I recommend it? To every person.
Update:3 years later and it's still looks and works like new. I don't abuse my items but I do daily them, I have no regrets with this purchase.
Its not mentioned in the description, but there's a protective strip inside of cushioning padding at the back-bottom where you would ordinarily have the "down" edge in your laptop bag. I didn't find the zippers at all awkward versus some other reviews. The internal ribbing allows some air around the laptop bottom: therefor I feel safe using the MacBook inside the case.
Its also airport-handy; you just unzip it, fold the upper half underneath the bottom half, and your laptop proceeds protected inside the TSA hard plastic bin.
It is rigid enough in the urethane shell that there is 360 degree edge-protection when zipped closed. I mean, compared with all the really light weight neoprene foam "sleeves" and cases. Not inexpensive this Thule, but not overpriced either for the product content.
Update at two months of use: all is well. I now am accustomed to routinely using my MacBook inside the opened Thule. Good Product.
