Bring your life
Whether it's exploring the spectacular nature of the great outdoors or traveling the world with family and friends, we all have a passion for enjoying an active life.
At Thule, we share your desire to spend more time enjoying your passions - which means less time worrying about how to bring all the stuff we need. For more than 75 years, Thule has been creating solutions to simplify life's adventures. Our focus has been on developing smart, stylish products that are sound, high quality, safe, and easy to use.
Whatever your passion, whatever your pursuit. Wherever you're going, whatever you're bringing. With Thule you're free to live your active life to the fullest.
Quality you can rely on
We’ll never know what adventures you’ll be taking your equipment on. That’s why we develop our products to manage any weather, any temperature, and any terrain in the whole world. We’ve come to the conclusion that nothing else will do. Every new product is put through temperatures of icy northern cold and burning desert heat, long sessions of intensive UV radiation, a salt chamber for corrosion endurance, several pressure and capacity tests – and finally a machine that shakes it for a lifetime’s worth, simulating two trips around the world in less than a week. Yes, the Thule Test Center is kind of brutal. But that’s the way the world is. And since we only give the sign of approval to products that have had the whole world against them (and survived it), it’s no wonder we’re international leaders in safety and durability – or that we even exceed the standards.

The carrier conveniently is compatible with 1-1/4" and 2" hitch receivers. Additional features include: an arch design for easier bike loading and carrying performance, increased mast height, Thule Hold Fast cradles and anti-sway cages, the ability to fold arms down flat, bike and rack security from theft with locks (sold separately), and an integrated carrying handle.

Four-bike Hitch Receiver Carrying Capacity
The Thule Vertex 9029 4-bike hitch rack carrier is designed for frequent cyclists and/or families that want the stability, and functionality of a hitch receiver carrier that can be left on vehicles without interfering with hatchbacks. The Vertex 9029 is compatible with 1-1/4" and 2" hitch receivers, and has a 4-bike carrying capacity managed by its two arched bike support arms. The naturally supportive arch design of the bike arms allows for easier bike loading and carrying performance. Thule Hold Fast cradles are installed on the arms. They feature a soft, single material cradle with a groove design that accommodates bike cables, cushions bikes and secures them during transport. In addition, straps used in cradles are 25% strong than current Thule T3 straps. To provide maximized bike stability, bike arms also feature anti-sway cages. Anti-sway cages are rigid rubberized bike rack components that attach to the lower edge of the bike arm, hanging below the bike cradle (one for each bike). As the top tube of bike frames rest on the carrier arms, the anti-sway cages attach to the vertical tube section of bike frames with included straps. This holds bikes firmly in place without the need of a heavy wheel tray sometimes used in hitch mount carriers. Bikes can be locked to the carrier with a cable lock (sold separately), and the carrier can be locked to a vehicle hitch receiver using a hitch receiver lock (sold separately).

Access to the Rear of Vehicles
The Vertex 9029 ensures easy access to hatchbacks is available through its leaning functionality. and improved hitch switch. With a pull of the lower release of the two-part hitch switch, the upright mast of the Vertex 9029 leans to the rear of the vehicle. Leaning functionality is best used when the carrier is unloaded to avoid unnecessary strain on cradles and no-sway cages. The upper release lever of the hitch switch controls the ability to fold bike arms down into a vertical position when the carrier is not loaded. This minimizes the possibility of driving and parking issues when the empty carrier is left on a vehicle.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2014This carrier has been great for the family! We have carried 5 bikes on it, and it does the job very well. It is tight, but with some adjusting and effort all 5 bikes fit without any rubbing or scraping on each other (kids and adult). The arched design of the arms may seem like a small thing, but it works well and makes a difference on space (especially with a full load).
We have a Yakima roof top box, so I looked at the Yakima bike carriers first. They are very comparable, but I liked this one better. I still like the rubber straps for holding the bikes in place on the Thule, compared to the new style on the Yakima racks. The style of strap on the Yakima has moving parts (i.e. potentially breakable), and they aren't any more secure than the rubber straps that Thule still uses.
Very sturdy, good quality materials, solid connections, convenient features (tip down feature for access to the hatch is nice). I feel good going down the highway fully loaded with this rack on.
The only thing that I'm not too happy about is how the hitch pin goes in (but I still give it 5 stars because it's a great rack). If you have a 5/8 inch hitch pin, it won't fit. This rack has a 1/2 inch through hole, but the pin that comes with it screws in on only one side. It's sturdy, but I don't want to bolt it and unbolt it each time, and I want a hitch pin that locks. Since I already had a nice locking hitch pin (5/8 inch), I didn't want to spend an additional $50 (current price) for the locking 1/2 inch pin they offer!!! In my experience, the "anti-wobble" feature is negligible anyway. I read of someone who drilled out the hole slightly for a 5/8 inch pin, but I have a friend with a drill press who put in a 5/8 inch hole 2-3 inches back further on the tongue; it works great and is plenty tight. I tested the hitch pin that it came with, and my 5/8 inch pin through the new hole, and there was no difference in 'wobble'.
It might void the warranty, but I'm not concerned about that. With the box construction of the tongue, the extra hole does not hurt or weaken it at all.
Just don't forget to put the hitch pin in, like some friends of the family did, dumping their bikes and rack at 70mph on the highway!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2013So far so good! One long trip and one local trip with no problems. We got the 5 bike because of what I've read about difficulties with getting the kids bikes on all the 4-bike versions out there. Glad we did. The extra room really helped. We did not need to buy the additional bar to get them on. The frame is heavy but I prefer that - it feels sturdier. The straps are pretty easy to get on. I wish it folded down with the bikes on it for access to the rear of the truck which is why I only give 4, but I'm probably better off not risking damage to my bikes from doing that. The fold down features are very easy to use.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2014I find the rack perfect for our two bikes, traveling 5-hours to and from our beach home. However, on the first use I had two of the six straps partially break (one a complete separation; the other a partial tear). This worries me with regard to any prolonged use; and how they will fare over time. But for the strap issues I would have rated this much higher.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2013We are a family of five (2 adults, 3 kids) and we all ride bikes, so we needed a 5 bike hitch rack. This one is top notch, high quality, easy to install and use. A couple of tips after using it for about a month are #1) If you have a very small child's bike it likely wont be able to sit on this rack because the top tube needs to be a certain length to go over both of the rack's poles that extend horizontally. It shouldn't be a big deal because if the bike is that small, there's a good chance you can squeeze it into your trunk or somewhere in the vehicle. Soon, my youngest child will grow into a larger bike and we'll be able to use all 5 spaces on the rack #2) I am going to invest in a Locking Hitch Pin, which you can find on Amazon for about 30 to 55 dollars. The reason is that we took our bikes on a 700 mile trip and the stock bolt that is used to secure your rack to your hitch actually loosened up by the time I arrived at my destination. There is a lock washer that comes with the rack, but apparently that wasn't enough to keep the bolt fully tight for the entire journey. This is a well built piece of equipment though and made our road trip a lot more enjoyable because we were able to go bike riding after we arrived at our destination. I would highly recommend this to anyone that has a need to transport five bikes. And if you are planning on traveling long distances, invest in the Locking Hitch Pin.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2013We have been using it for a while now with 4 bikes (3 x 24+ inch bikes and 1 x 20" bike. I also purchased a strap to hold the bike rack up since my car only had a 1 1/4" hitch. I am a little concerned whether this would hold up on a long trip. The other day I noticed the bolt was a little loose and the rack was swaying sideways a little bit. How the bolt got loose is beyond me. It seems to me that you have to check on the bolt once in a while to make sure it stays tight.
UPDATE on 5/11/2016
We have been using this on and off. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to keep the rack secure without wobble. There is a slight "play" when I install the bike rack no matter how much I tighten the supplied bolt with washers. After a few hours (on long road trips), the wobble increases. I do not recommend this bike rack. I have also reached out to Thule customer service asking for advice. Waiting to hear back.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2012Having been a Thule fan in the past, my immediate choice when we were looking for a bike rack for our hitch was a Thule. The choice was easy, a four bike hitch. While the structure is good and sound the black elastic straps they supply are AWFUL!! Drove from Atlanta to Myrtle Beach with the family and four bikes on it's maiden voyage and 5 of the straps ripped. YES, ripped!! I was disappointed and am in the middle of talking to Thule about replacing them. The whole is only as good as the sum of it's parts and right now some of the parts suck on the new Thule rack.
