Book Description

Lieutenant Commander “Gunner” McCormick is assigned as an intelligence officer to Carrier Strike Force 10, being deployed to the Yellow Sea at the invitation of South Korea for joint exercises with the US Navy. During his pre-deployment briefing, he discovers a TOP-SECRET MEMO revealing rumors that the North Koreans may still be holding a handful of elderly Americans from the Korean War in secret prison camps. As it happens, Gunner’s grandfather, who was a young marine officer in the Korean War, disappeared at Chosin Reservoir over 60 years ago and is still listed as MIA in North Korea. Sworn to silence about what he has read, the top-secret memo eats at him. Gunner decides to spend all his inheritance and break every military regulation in the book to finance his own three-man commando squad on a suicide mission north of the DMZ to search for clues about the fate of his grandfather. Risking his career, his fortune, and his life, Gunner will get his answers, or he will die trying. Don Brown is building a loyal fan base by writing what he knows best: thrillers with heart. A former Navy JAG officer and action officer in the Pentagon, Brown pens action-packed plots and finely-drawn characters that are credible and compelling. Thunder in the Morning Calm is a novel of bravery, duty, and family love that will keep readers of all ages reading straight through to the last page.

    About the Author

Don Brown is the author of Malacca Conspiracy, The Navy Justice Series and Black Sea Affair, a submarine thriller that predicted the 2008 shooting war between Russia and Georgia. Don served five years in the U.S. Navy as an officer in the Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps, which gave him an exceptional vantage point into both the Navy and the inner workings of 'inside-the-beltway' as an action officer assigned to the pentagon. He left active duty in 1992 to pursue private practice, but remained on inactive status through 1999, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He and his family live in North Carolina, where he pursues his passion for penning novels about the Navy.

    My Review:

I received Thunder In the Morning Calm by Don Brown compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review and I was not disappointed. After reading The Malacca Conspiracy, I knew I had to read this one as well. Don Brown's writing style is designed to capture you within the first chapter and from then on, he guarantees to keep you glued to the book until you finish the final page. Believing that there are still missing MIA's that are unaccounted for, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book and see how it turns out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! Superb read! Get it and enjoy it! September 8, 2011
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
"Thunder in the Morning Calm" is an excellent, fast paced book which captures and holds your attention throughout. The premise (wealthy Navy Lieutenant Commander enters North Korea in search of MIA's which might include his missing Grandfather) is not at all far fetched. The writing is very well done with a minimum of typo's and other errors which keeps the reading enjoyable. I got this book in the top 100 free category but I would gladly have paid for it. I don't normally read war books yet my only two book reviews to date are related to books about war. All I can say is this book kept me feeling proud of our armed services and proud to be an American. I wholeheartedly recommend "Thunder in the Morning Calm" to anyone who enjoys a well written read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the read November 28, 2011
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I purchased this book during one of Amazon's free offerings, thinking that I would get it for my husband. I started reading it this weekend and could not put it down. It was gripping from the beginning, all the way to the last page. It has some very thought provoking statements - especially about how complacent we have become in the United States - as long as our needs are met - we are not willing to sacrifice for another. The concept of leaving no one behind in our "me" fat baby generation is a foreign concept. I highly recommend this to everyone. It will fire up your patriotism!

    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I would have to say that this book is probably one of my favorite top ten!!!! I was totally hooked from the beginning and couldnt wait to see how it ended. Of course it ended with me holding my breath with tears streaming down my face. I loved his writing style and the way he put such detail with his words. This is the first review I have written and cannot praise this book enough. Do yourself a favor and read this fantastic book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Captivating Story April 7, 2012
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Once again Don Brown delivers a story that kept me reading every spare moment I had. I could not put it down. The story revolves around a Prison Camp in North Korea and the efforts to find and retrieve any POWs that still remain from the Korean War. Each page and chapter brought so many different emotions that I felt I was there with them. The ending was extremely emotional. I would absolutely recommend reading this book and all other books by this very talented author.

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Story, Slight Irritation in Political Opinions February 19, 2014
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
There was only a short area where there was a direct insult to the current President. I understand that people have their own political views, but I felt the statement took away from the well written and researched story. It's the one thing I remember from the story that bothered me. The rest of the story was well written, and the political view could have been slightly shrouded by using a fictional character name for the "previous administration". Other than that, I felt this was a well written story with the appropriate level of detail and research.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keep 'em coming Don February 4, 2014

I have become a huge Don Brown fan. This novel, like all the others Don has written, is one that is hard to put down. Each chapter ends and makes you want to continue with the next chapter. I read all the Navy Justice Series books and the Pacific Rim Series is great.
