The US aviation industry produced three great fighter designs to equip its burgeoning army air force during World War 2, and of this trio, Republic's P-47 Thunderbolt was easily the heaviest. Powered, crucially, by a turbocharged Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine that produced 2000 hp, the first production fighters reached the 56th FG in June 1942, and six months later the group joined the Eight Air Force in Britain. The arrival of the first P-47Cs in mid-1943 addressed the problem of the aircraft's short combat radius, as this model could be fitted with an external tank. Slowly, as combat tactics evolved in units like the 56th and 78th FGs, pilots learnt how best to fly the Thunderbolt in order to effectively counter the more nimble Luftwaffe fighters.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Osprey's Aircraft of the Aces series combines full colour artwork, the best archival contemporary photography, and first hand accounts from aces to bring history's greatest airborne conflicts to life.

About the Author

Chris Davey has illustrated more than 70 titles for Osprey's Aircraft of the Aces and Combat Aircraft series since 1994. Based in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, as one of the very last traditional airbrush artists in the business, he has become the company's illustrator of choice for both USAAF fighters and RAF subject matter, proving his undoubted skill when dealing with large aircraft subjects such as the Halifax, Sunderland, Lancaster, and Stirling.

If you like World War Two aviation, in particular, the P-47 Thunderbolt, this is an excellent reference volume for your library! Jerry Scutts is a well-reputed aviation historian that specializes in the Luftwaffe and U. S. Air Forces in WWII. Featured in this Osprey Aircraft of the Aces volume are the 4th, 56th, and 78th Fighter Group aces which flew the "Jug". Iain Wyllie's excellent cover artwork portrays Colonel Dave Schilling, the CO of 56th FG, flying a P-47D-25 decorated with the cartoon character "Hairless Joe" on its engine cowling, as he destroys the fourth of the five claims he made on the morning of December 23, 1944. Like other Osprey volumes, this one has forty two superb Chris Davey-rendered aircraft profiles, terrific black and white photos of the aces and their "jugs", first hand accounts, and 1/72nd scale drawings executed by Mark Styling! If your looking for "Hub" Zemke and "Gabby" Gabreski they are here! I highly recommend this volume to any WWII aviation enthusiast!

Got this for a friend who loves modeling WWII warbirds and the color photo's of the Mighty Eighth P-47 Fighter Groups and Squadrons are unparalleled with beautiful renderings to aid ... great book for that and just a good book on a great airplane.

This book is about famous aces of the 62nd FS/56th FG. Like Hubert 'Hub' Zemke, Rober S. 'Bob' Johnson, Walker 'Bud' Mahurin and a few more. With first hand accounts with Fw-190s and Bf-109s and how the P-47s 'bagged' them.
I only give this book a four star instead of the usual five because the book didn't deliver a complete satisfaction that other books did for me. I would not say it's a bad book, but it's not up the the other 5 star books Osprey's published.
If you want to read about 'Hub' Zemke, 'Bob' Johnson, 'Bud' Mahurin and a few more, then buy this book. But don't expect a wow out of this.

Complete History of the Thunderbolt aces of the Eighth Air Force. Great pictures of the individual aces and the planes they flew. I was especially surprised of the fate of each plane that was flown and when it was lost.

Great overviews of P-47s in WW2. Usual Osprey details and some decent pics. Thunderbolt by Caiden, Hub Zemkes bio and Honest John are better reads.
