Dead box after only 3 months

Dead box after only 3 months
92 days after buying the OTA Bolt, it failed (bad hard drive). When calling customer support I was told I would have to pay $49 to have a replacement sent to me while it is still under warrantee. This is the second Tivo box I have had with a hard drive that has failed in less than half a year. Needless to say all the shows and movies I had recorded were toast. I have been with Tivo since 2001, but I can honestly say in the last few years their customer support and product quality has went downhill. There are much better options out there these days, sad to say but I’m finally jumping ship on Tivo. Be wise, look elsewhere for your DVR needs.

We were going to purchase the Amazon Recast, but the negative reviews about the interface caused us to go with TIVO. We used to have TIVO with our DirectTV many, many years ago, and liked it a lot. We are cable cutters, and have been for about 6 years now, but never thought to want to be able to record the shows off of the air. We pay for Netflix and Hulu, and have an Amazon Prime account. We have been using an Apple TV for years. The Tivo has mostly taken away the need for the Apple TV. I'll have to see about that one.

I planned to wait to review the TIVO until we'd had it for a while, but I can already tell how much better our TV watching has become. The Tivo found way more channels than our Vizio Smart TV did using the same antenna. Now we have a guide, and the ability to tape shows and fast forward through commercials. It came with HULU and Netflix and Prime Video already loaded, so we just use these apps on the Tivo now. I can't say enough good about the on-screen guide. It's so easy, and we can get a pass to tape all of our favorite shows. The voice control allows us to search for anything without having to type it in. It really works well.

I gotta say, It's all about the interface. The remote and the on-screen guide make it very easy. The annual fee for using the TIVO service is only $69. Quite a bargain. I was going to get a subscription to Sling TV, but I will wait and see if we really need it. We live near LA, so we have access to so much digital content just using the Antenna. If you live somewhere else, check to see what you can get with an antenna before considering the OTA version. It works great for us. I think the only thing left for us to purchase will be Disney+, which is a Hulu add-on as part of a bundle. I already have Hulu, so it will only be a few dollars more a month. We now get all the TV we could ever want for less than $25/month. I don't count Amazon Prime in that because I pay for Prime for other reasons and the TV stuff is just a bonus.

BTW...Installation was really easy. I thought it would take a while, but we hooked up the antenna and the TIVO started up, asked us a few questions and for the internet password to hook up wirelessly to the wifi, then scanned the channels, did a software update and we were done and up and running. I had signed up for Tivo service about 10 minutes prior to setting up the device and when it hooked up to Wifi, already had all of our account info and authorizations. We then had to sign into the Netflix and Hulu accounts, but were up and running in about 20 minutes. It told us it might take a few days to have the guide loaded with up to two weeks of programming, but it seemed like it was working right away.

We couldn't be happier. We went from 3 remotes to 1. So very nice. If anything goes wrong, I will update this review, but I can't imaging finding a problem (unless, of course it dies - then we will be very sad).

February 1, 2020 we ordered a TiVo Bolt to replace our old TiVo Romeo, which had worked very well for some years. My husband got the new Bolt connected and we were so happy as we have only an antennae and broadcast channels and TiVo Give us so many options. Within 2-3 weeks we started having the same problems we had with the old Romeo. We had to reboot the TiVo 2-3 time during the watching of one movie and when that didn't work we had to reboot the modem. After five months the problems were so bad the TiVo was ready for the trash. I contacted Amazon customer service and they gave us a refund. We assumed we had gotten a lemon, so on August 5, 2020 we ordered another TiVo bolt. We have only had it six weeks now and it is doing exactly the same thing as the one we ordered in February. We can't watch any of the apps without booting 3-4 times in a two hour period. Do not waste your money on this item! I would have give zero stars but had to give one in order to write a review.

Oct. 9, 2020...After writing the first review on this second TiVo Bolt, we searched for an OTA DVR with good reviews, ordered two others that we returned for two different reasons and hooked the Bolt back up and figured we would just have to put up with rebooting when streaming. We discovered what others say about TiVo being the easiest to use, with the best Guide, is very true. I had to call TiVo customer service to reinstate our service, after having canceled it, and in talking with Jay, the five plus star Customer Service Rep, we found the perfect solution to the rebooting problem. Jay took the time, after reinstating our service, to tell us about the TiVo Streamer 4K for $49.99, with NO monthly or annual service charge ever. You don't even have to have a TiVo account to install and use it. We checked into it , ordered it, installed it and it works perfectly. The picture and sound (Pandora) are both exceptionally good. So for only $49, we have great OTA and Streaming and NO rebooting. TiVo really needs to advertise this combination, so TiVo lovers can continue to enjoy all that Tivo has to offer! I hope this helps many of you correct this one issue.

Install went smoothly, remote seems well designed, but ended up loosing channels after about one day. Was getting V52 error. Tried rebooting the box and rescanning the channels. Neither helped. Searched on-line, learned it's not unusual for Tivos to loose a tuner. It could be because they were dead from the start, can't tell because it randomly assigns tuners and it's hit or miss if you have a bad one. Ran diagnostics and learned that tuners 0 and 1 were not receiving a signal. Called support and they had me reboot then reset the box to defaults. That takes about 30 minutes and they assured me it would solve the problem. Nothing changed, don't see how resetting the box would fix a broken tuner. Aside from that, the tuner are not very good. There are several channels getting bad reception while my TV set on the same antenna has no trouble getting them in. Mentioned that to support and the response was it's an add-on and won't do as well. However I had an Airtv box that was put out a picture as good as my TV (until it stopped working after a few months, so can't recommend it either). The Tivo is going back, will try the Amazon Fire Recast.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy if in Canada
Reviewed in Canada on October 26, 2019
After receiving the product and calling to activate the customer service took some time to find out but eventually came back to the phone to say this product does NOT work in Canada. Not sure why they have it listed on amazon.CA and don't mention that it is for the USA only.
I am sure it works well in the States so do not like to give only one star but as it did not work in Canada I could not say how good a product it is.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cannot be used in Canada!!!
Reviewed in Canada on December 3, 2019
After receiving remarks from other amazon users that they successfully used this in Canada, I was excited and decided to give it a shot, as the other option seemed less appealing. I then proceeded to spend several hours on the phone with various reps and tech services people, but it turns out it cannot be used here.
