I had used TiVo about 10 years ago and had switched to a windows media center pc. That PC was getting pretty old and slow even after multiple upgrades and I found out Comcast would work with TiVo in my area. I always loved my TiVo and was tired of the quirks and glitches with WMC. So I was excited to get this major upgrade - new TiVo interface, integrated with Comcast so no extra cable box, and 4 tuners!!

Unfortunately TiVo hasn't really done much with their software in like 10 years! Are there new features - yes - I can stream netflix and amazon and even local media, but my TV and DVD player can do that probably even better than the TiVo. Can I record 4 shows at once? Yes - that is about the only really cool feature - not having to worry about overlapping recordings. But even then, the interface gets slower the more it is doing and I frequently press a button and when nothing happens press it again only to find out 1.5 seconds later that it took both button presses and went beyond what I was trying to do.

I have had this TiVo for about 4 months and will probably keep it for a year or two. But I mean if Apple or Amazon (or even MS XBOX) looks really great I will probably switch. I am glad I did not buy the lifetime TiVo service. I was just really disappointed that the once great TiVo is almost still the same and even clunky user interface. What happened?

UPDATE: A couple additional comments. First the good - they have released a pretty cool ipad app that allows you to control the tivo and maybe even stream tivo content to the ipad. It is a very nice way to navigate most of the tivo functions. Unfortunately it does not allow you to control everything like the streaming services - how ridiculous. It a great feature but with severe limitations.

I bought this to replace the last set top box in my house. We had too many conflicts where two shows being recorded, so what the heck, let's buy a four tuner.

Why does my beloved Tivo company think that it is ok to take 3 steps backwards? As an early adopter (2001 with DirecTivo), I have seen Tivo improve the product in so many ways. The "sports" recording options to over-record for overtime; the overlap management with the weird 62 minute shows; and the multi-room sharing/streaming. All of these things are state of the art.

Netflix streaming was one of those brilliant decisions. You don't need Roku (or a Media Center PC) to watch Netflix. The problem is that the evolution of the product has sacrificed performance. Series 3 had a limited Netflix viewer that required you to select shows to an "Instant Queue," but it would boot up promptly from the Tivo. In comes the Premiere's with their fancy Netflix browser, and the boot time to watch a "Parks and Recreation" is a slothy 70 seconds. I know that Tivo saves a lot of money with their cool linux build on cheap processors, but it is time to spend some R&D on speed.

They've gotten a little big in their britches with their service pricing, but so have the cable companies with their proprietary PVR's. And, my fingers have a decade of muscle memory with the 3-speed fast forward, that I couldn't imagine moving to another PVR.

Bottom line: Room to improve, but still the best in the market.

this is my second unit. I made the purchase for I tire of being ripped off by the cable companies. I 'lease' their unit for 16.99 a month and have to turn it in when I leave them. I OWN this box. I can record four shows at once. I can join netflix and hulu plus thru this unit and it has the bells and whistles I want in a box. I don't have to add on accessories. I LOVE this unit. I did have a problem with it. The remote did not work. I have other tivo remotes but at some point I will contact them (or amazon) to get a replacement unit but that did not stop me from enjoying the unit

I'll really focus on the negatives more than the positives here.. But for starters this DVR has a great, easy to use menu, and awesome features like Netflix and Pandora, etc. Very easy to use and wishlists are cool, you never miss a talk show with your favorite actor or band, or sports games with your favorite team! Also the app on my Iphone is awesome! Easily the best DVR out there!

For the issues..
(UPDATE 4/5/2013) TiVo Still restarts just as frequently, about once a week-2 weeks. Even after the newest software update.
(UPDATE 7/7/2013) Haven't had a restart in two weeks since last update. Some channels have trouble tuning in which requires me to restart TiVo manually.
(UPDATE 12/12/2013)- Ads are now even bigger, and in more places than before. Getting ridiculous and they are getting in the way!
(UPDATE 1/20/2015)- Ads are still in the way, no bugs have been fixed. Interface looks a bit better than before and some more HD apps. No more YouTube app.

-The DVR doesn't tell you when you've watched a program. Also the "NEW" yellow box logo stays with all programs that were recorded the first week they aired. In other words, almost everything on my DVR says "NEW," even though it's 3 months old now. Fix this with an easy software update? But they haven't had it for years, so don't expect it.

- There are ADs everywhere. TiVo.. I'm paying you $15 a month, for what? idk, and you throw advertisements covering the bottom 1/3 of the screen at me when I pause something, Bounty Toilet Paper ADS everywhere. Is that a joke?

-When moving from the TV broadcast, to the guide, to the menu, the tv program glitches out for a second, so you miss a tiny bit of dialogue.
