This is my first Tivo and I don't seem to have any problems with it. It records the shows spot on and off (beginning and end) without missing a beat. It even records other shows it thinks I might like so there's always stuff to watch.... and remember, I'm on bunny ears antenna (which picks up 30 channels in our area). Hook up your Netflix to it and it feels like Comcast (Minus all the outragous fees). Oh, I'm recording everything in HD where available and I'm only at 35 percent full. Don't sweat it for recording your movies or shows when your gone for the weekend. Hope this helps! :-)
unfortunately it does not live up to the current standards. And really a lot of it is tivo stupidly holding on to old practices. Take system startup. Why on earth does it take ten minutes to start your tivo up? Even just to reboot? There is NO other device in my house that takes that long, by a wide margin. In these days of instant on devices, the Tivo load time is absolutely appalling. The SD tivo menu has not evolved AT ALL. I started with my Tivo in 2005... I was using Windows XP! Did the boys and girls at Tivo just all say "Nailed it!" and never return to their UI in over half a decade?
I just think about how lame the menu system is on a Tivo PREMIERE (doesn't that denote a luxurious experience?) and I die a little. However, tivo is still a great device for recording and experiencing TV. This tivo can record a ton of SD video, so much that its suggested recordings are actually interesting to parse through. It does a good job of managing its to-do list and the dual channel recording is absolutely seamless so we're not thinking about "bouncing" between the tuners or anything like what we experienced with the cable company's DVR. The overall performance of the machine, once its on and running, is very good. I have heard that HD menues are slower though, so I'm hesitant about what I'll experience once I finally move up to HD.
So, for what a tivo used to be, this is an excellent DVR. If you only need a box to record tons of TV and not a lot of "media streaming" or "aggregating" or any of those buzzwords, then you're set. If you crave a buffet of different content, this is not the box. At least, not quite. Yes, you can watch Youtube, Amazon on demand and Netflix, but the interface is clunky and ugly compared to the computer or even other devices (apple TV, roku, etc.) that all come at similar price points. Good luck pulling content from your computer to your tivo, that software sucks too. It seems like Tivo is trying to do a lot with not a lot. I will probaby wind up getting another box to do all the stuff that tivo either doesn't do or does so poorly.
/nifty tip: you can connect a USB keyboard to the back of your Tivo for high speed text entry. This made setup much faster, especially setting up all of the season passes.
