Product description

A blessing contacts & shares what is good, in a divine sense. One makes contact with the force of goodness itself & invites this energy into a situation so it may pass on that energy to those present. A Buddhist blessing ceremony is ritual & spirit. A white thread is tied to or wrapped around a Buddha image, then looped 3 x around a water vessel sitting in front of the senior monastic. The vessel has a candle pressed onto it or resting over the opening above the water. The thread is passed to members of the sangha around a perimeter of the group. The ball of thread is placed on the shrine, completing a circle. The Buddha image is a foundation in all ceremonies. The 8 strands thread symbolizes the 8-fold path. White represents purity & thread symbolises unity, connection, harmony, peace & solidarity. Water-vessel is a microcosm of 4 elements. Earth the solid vessel & candle wax; water in the vessel; air shared by all as we breathe & fire when the candle is lit. Water symbol of life, purity & cleansing. Thread 3x pass around the water vessel relates to 3 Refuges. Encircling the thread forms a tangible container & includes all present, drawing us together, connected to Buddha's image & being joined to the sangha, 3 refuges & whole cosmos. The candle is lit & devas called. A traditional chant draws in the listener & focuses the mind of all present on goodness of their own lives, of all those they are connected to Buddha, Dhamma, Sangha & universe. Devas are the official delegates of universal goodness invited into the circle. The Sangha chants a traditional verses of protection & blessing. Toward the end of chanting the candle is extinguished in water. Water is able to receive & absorb a great variety of substances. It absorbs goodness in the situation & we make holy water by infusing it with goodness, permeating it with wholesomeness. At the end of chanting the thread is wound up. Water is sprinkled over the assembly while Verses of Victory are chanted & all are moved.
